How to add Slack to proALPHA
Short answer
To use Slack with proALPHA, build a Slack app that posts ERP alerts into channels, exposes slash commands for lookups and sends interactive approval buttons. A small connector calls proALPHA's web services for writes and uses a read-only database account for reads. Slack is a good fit for engineering and operations teams that already use it.
Slack is less common than Teams in German mid-market manufacturing, but it is widespread in engineering groups, software-heavy machine builders and companies with international operations. Where it is the standard tool, proALPHA events tend to be buried in e-mail while the team discusses everything else in Slack.
The goal is not to replace the ERP client. It is to bring a small number of events and questions to where people already talk, and to keep a record of the decision in proALPHA.
This page assumes a proALPHA installation on Progress OpenEdge; interface details vary by release, so confirm them with your partner.
What teams use it for
Late work order alerts to a line channel
A daily or hourly post of work orders running behind with the blocking material, so supervisors can respond in thread.
Slash command for stock
Typing a command with an item number returns on-hand, allocated and incoming quantities by warehouse, using a read-only query.
Engineering change notices
When an engineering change is released in proALPHA, post affected items and open orders so purchasing and production can react.
Interactive purchase approvals
Approve or reject from a message with Block Kit buttons; the connector verifies the user's ERP authority and records the outcome.
Customer escalation room
When a sales order is flagged as critical, open a channel with the order, delivery status and open quality items.
proALPHA integration surface
- proALPHA web service interfaces for reading and creating business objects, with the available catalogue depending on release and licence.
- Read-only SQL access to the OpenEdge database for lookups and for change detection by timestamp or status fields.
- Workflow and scheduled job features in proALPHA that can trigger exports or outbound calls.
- Export interfaces producing files or messages for integration platforms, where an ESB or iPaaS already exists.
- Existing proALPHA users and groups, mapped to Slack user IDs for authority checks.
How it works
- 1
Create the Slack app
Define scopes for posting, commands and interactivity. Install to the workspace with an admin approval step.
- 2
Define channels and ownership
Create alert channels with clear owners. Avoid one general channel; routing by plant, line or function reduces noise.
- 3
Detect ERP changes
Use proALPHA workflow triggers if available, or poll a view of changed objects and keep a cursor so nothing is posted twice.
- 4
Post structured messages
Use Block Kit with the key fields, a link to the record, and only the buttons that make sense.
- 5
Verify signatures and identity
Validate Slack's request signature and map the Slack user ID to a proALPHA user before any action.
- 6
Write back through supported services
Call the web service for approvals or comments, re-check state, and update the message with the result.
Example flows
Engineering change reaches purchasing
Trigger: An engineering change is released that affects a purchased component.
- Connector lists affected items and open purchase orders.
- A message in the purchasing channel shows the change and suppliers involved.
- A buyer replies in thread and taps Create task to open a follow-up in proALPHA.
Result: Open orders for obsolete revisions are caught before the supplier ships.
Stock check by slash command
Trigger: A planner types a stock command with an item number.
- Slack sends the command to the connector with a signed request.
- Connector queries on-hand and incoming quantities read-only.
- An ephemeral reply shows quantities and next receipts.
Result: Quick answers that do not require a client login or a call to the warehouse.
Keeping data on-prem
Slack runs in Slack's cloud, so message content leaves your network when posted. Design the integration so the ERP stays on-premise and the connector runs inside your network, making outbound calls to Slack and receiving interactions through one reverse-proxied endpoint, or using Socket Mode to avoid any inbound port. If your policy forbids sending certain data to a third-party SaaS, restrict messages to references and statuses, or choose a self-hosted chat alternative. Any AI used to interpret commands can run locally on an open-weight model.
Security checklist
- Verify Slack request signatures and timestamps to prevent replay.
- Check ERP authority at the moment of each action.
- Keep prices, drawings and personal data out of public channels.
- Rotate bot tokens and store them in a secrets manager.
- Retain an audit log linking Slack message, user and ERP object.
Ways to get it done
Generic automation tool (iPaaS or workflow builder)
Effort: Days.
Quick for one-way alerts if an HTTP or database trigger exists.
Custom Slack app and connector
Effort: Two to four weeks for a first set.
Best for slash commands, approvals and consistent identity mapping.
Partner such as Netray
Effort: Pilot with one alert and one command.
Fits when you want a natural-language assistant in Slack on a private model with controlled write-back.
Pitfalls
- !Flooding channels with every ERP event until people mute them.
- !Skipping signature verification on interactive endpoints.
- !Using a personal Slack token for the bot.
- !Letting a slash command run unrestricted SQL.
- !Posting commercial data into channels with external guests.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Slack connector for proALPHA?
We know of no standard one from proALPHA, though a partner or iPaaS vendor may provide one. Most implementations are a small custom app calling proALPHA's web services and a read-only database. Confirm what your release exposes.
Can we approve ERP documents in Slack?
Yes with interactive buttons, as long as the connector validates the user's authority in proALPHA and re-checks document state before writing. Record the decision in proALPHA so the audit trail stays in the ERP.
How do we avoid alert fatigue?
Route by role, send only exceptions, group updates into digests and let users subscribe. Start with two or three alerts that someone clearly owns, and expand only when they are used.
Does this need inbound firewall changes?
Not necessarily. With Socket Mode the connector opens an outbound connection to Slack and receives events over it. Otherwise, publish a single HTTPS endpoint through a reverse proxy.
Can an AI assistant answer ERP questions in Slack?
Yes. Put a retrieval layer over read-only proALPHA data behind the bot and show the source record in each answer. Use a local open-weight model if the data cannot go to a public API.
