How to add a mobile app to proALPHA

Short answer

A mobile app for proALPHA is built as a thin client over the ERP's web services, with barcode scanning, a local queue for offline use and server-side validation. Start with one workflow, such as goods receipt or production confirmation, then extend. Check whether proALPHA or a partner already offers mobile modules for your release before building.

The proALPHA client is designed for desktops. On the shop floor and in the warehouse, people stand at pallets or machines with a scanner or phone, and the gap is filled with paper and later keying. Errors happen at the keying step, and the ERP shows stale stock and progress.

A mobile app fixes this when it is narrow: one task per screen, scan first, minimal typing, and instant validation. A wide app that copies the ERP menu usually fails adoption.

The design below is generic across proALPHA releases. Interface names, available mobile modules and licensing differ, so confirm what your version provides before writing code.

What teams use it for

Goods receipt by scanning

Scan the purchase order or delivery note barcode, confirm quantities per line, capture lot numbers and post the receipt.

Production confirmation and labour reporting

Operators scan a work order and operation, start and stop time, report quantities and scrap with reason codes.

Stock transfers and cycle counts

Scan from and to locations and items for moves, and count against a list with variance review.

Picking and shipping confirmation

Guide pickers by location, confirm each pick by scan and print or show the packing list on completion.

Service technician work orders

View assigned service orders, log time and parts, capture photos and a customer signature, and sync when connectivity returns.

Mobile approvals

Approve requisitions and orders on the phone, with the approver's authority checked on the server.

proALPHA integration surface

  • proALPHA web service interfaces for stock movements, production confirmations, receipts and service data, depending on release and licensed modules.
  • Any mobile or shop-floor data collection modules from proALPHA or its partners (BDE and MDE style), which may cover part of the scope already.
  • Read-only OpenEdge SQL access for lookups that have no service, such as item and location search.
  • Label and barcode printing from proALPHA output management for lot and location labels.
  • User authentication from proALPHA or a directory, to carry user identity into each transaction.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose one workflow and device

Pick the transaction with most keying today, and decide on rugged scanners, phones or tablets. Camera scanning is enough for low volume.

  2. 2

    Define the API facade

Place a thin service between the app and proALPHA that exposes simple endpoints, validates input and hides ERP internals.

  3. 3

    Authenticate users

Use single sign-on or badge login mapped to a proALPHA user, so postings carry the real person.

  4. 4

    Build scan-first screens

Validate each scan against master data at once, show errors in plain language, and keep taps minimal.

  5. 5

    Handle offline

Queue transactions locally with idempotency keys and sync in order, with conflict messages when stock or status has changed.

  6. 6

    Pilot and expand

Run one area for a few weeks, measure keying time and error rate, then add transactions.

Example flows

Receive against a purchase order

Trigger: A truck arrives with a delivery note.

  1. Receiver scans the PO barcode and the app loads open lines.
  2. Each item is scanned, quantity entered and lot captured.
  3. Over-delivery beyond tolerance is blocked with a message.
  4. The facade posts the receipt and prints lot labels.

Result: Stock is visible to planning when the truck is unloaded, not hours later.

Operator confirms an operation

Trigger: An operator finishes a batch at a machine.

  1. Operator scans the work order and operation.
  2. Enters good and scrap quantities, picking a reason for scrap.
  3. The facade posts the confirmation and updates remaining quantity.

Result: Work-in-process and completion dates reflect reality during the shift.

Keeping data on-prem

The app can talk to proALPHA entirely inside your network. Devices connect over Wi-Fi to the facade in your data centre or a DMZ, and the ERP is never exposed directly. For remote technicians, use a VPN or a reverse proxy with strong authentication and device management. Offline queues are encrypted on the device. If you add voice or natural-language entry, a locally hosted open-weight model can interpret commands without sending audio or text outside the site.

Security checklist

  • Use device management (MDM) and enforce screen lock and encryption.
  • Authenticate every request and bind each posting to a named user.
  • Validate everything on the server, never trust the app for quantities or authority.
  • Use TLS everywhere, including on the shop-floor Wi-Fi.
  • Wipe local queues on logout and on lost-device report.

Ways to get it done

proALPHA or partner mobile and data collection modules

Effort: Configuration and training; licensing varies.

First place to look; fastest if your processes match their screens.

Low-code app over a web service facade

Effort: Weeks for a first app.

Good for simple forms and approvals when scanning needs are modest.

Custom app, built in-house or with a partner like Netray

Effort: One workflow in a few weeks, then iterate.

Needed for heavy offline use, unusual workflows, or when voice and AI assistance are wanted on a private model.

Pitfalls

  • !Replicating the whole ERP menu on a small screen.
  • !Posting directly into the database instead of the supported services.
  • !No idempotency on offline sync, which creates duplicate receipts.
  • !Ignoring glove use, glare and noisy Wi-Fi in the plant.
  • !Skipping a pilot area and rolling out to every line at once.

Frequently asked questions

Does proALPHA offer a mobile app?

proALPHA and its partners have offered mobile and data collection options, but scope and names differ by release. Check with your partner first. If they cover your workflow, use them; if not, build a thin app over the web services.

Can we post stock movements from a phone safely?

Yes, if it goes through the supported services with server-side validation and a named user. Never let the app write directly to the database, because you bypass the ERP's business rules.

How does offline mode work?

The app stores transactions locally with unique keys and syncs when connected. The server rejects duplicates and reports conflicts, such as stock already moved. Keep offline use to flows that truly need it.

Which devices are best?

Rugged handhelds with built-in scanners suit warehouses and production. Phones with camera scanning are fine for low volumes and for service staff. Test scanning speed on your real labels before choosing.

Can we add AI features to the app?

Yes, such as voice entry, suggested scrap reasons or photo-based checks. Run models locally if the data must stay on-site, and keep the human confirmation step on every posting.
