ABAP Technical Specification Template for Custom Development

A good technical specification lets another developer build and test the object without a meeting. This template gives you the sections reviewers expect: objective, data model, selection screen, logic, error handling, authorisation, performance and test scenarios.

ABAP Technical Specification Template

Technical Specification: Open sales order aging report

Object: ZSD_OPEN_ORDER_AGING Type: Report Package: ZSD_REPORTING Author: A. Developer Date: 2026-10-20 Functional specification: FS-SD-0142

1. Objective

Provide sales managers with a list of open sales order items grouped by age bucket, so overdue deliveries can be escalated.

2. Data model

Tables and views read: VBAK, VBAP, VBEP, KNA1

3. Selection screen and input

Sales organisation (mandatory), customer range, order date range, age bucket size in days (default 30).

4. Processing logic

1. Read open items from VBAP and VBEP with a delivery status not complete. 2. Join customer name from KNA1. 3. Calculate age as today minus requested delivery date. 4. Group into buckets and display in ALV with totals.

5. Error handling and messages

Show a message if no data is found. Log authorisation failures. Skip items with missing customer master and list them in a second output section.

6. Authorisation

Authorisation object V_VBAK_VKO on sales organisation

7. Performance and volume

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Fill the fields in order, starting with the objective and the functional specification reference. List the tables and views the object reads, since that is where the review of performance and authorisation begins. Describe the selection screen with mandatory fields and defaults, then write the processing logic as numbered steps. Export to PDF for review or to Word for comments. Keep one specification per object and version it with the transport request.

  • One specification per development object
  • Link to the functional specification by ID
  • Number the logic steps so reviewers can comment on them

What reviewers look for

Reviewers check that the data model matches the real tables and that the volume is stated, because performance problems start with a missing volume. They look at authorisation: which object protects the data, and what happens when a user lacks it. They check error handling for missing master data and empty results, and for interfaces, what happens on a retry. A specification that says how failures are handled usually produces fewer production incidents.

  • State expected data volumes
  • Name the authorisation object and fields checked
  • Describe empty result and error cases
  • For interfaces, describe retry and duplicate handling

Tips for stronger specs

Write in the language of the data: use real table and field names, not descriptions. Include a small worked example with input values and the expected output row, since an example removes most ambiguity. Record decisions, for example why a CDS view was chosen over a report, so later maintainers understand the reasoning. Keep the document short. If it needs thirty pages, the object probably needs splitting.

  • Use real table and field names
  • Include a worked example row
  • Record design decisions and alternatives
  • Keep it short enough to read in one sitting

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a functional and a technical specification?

The functional specification states what the business needs and the rules. The technical specification states how the object will be built: tables, logic, authorisations, error handling and tests. Developers write or complete the second from the first.

How long should an ABAP technical specification be?

For a report or enhancement, two to five pages is typical. Interfaces and conversions may need more because of field mappings. Use a separate mapping table rather than long prose.

Should the spec include code?

Short pseudo-code or key queries can help, but the specification should not duplicate the program. Put the logic in steps and let the code be the implementation.

Who signs off the technical specification?

Usually the functional consultant, a technical lead and sometimes the business owner. Agree this in the project before the first object is specified.
