ABAP Transport Request Release Checklist
Most failed SAP imports are not code bugs, they are missing objects, wrong import order or untested changes. This checklist covers the checks an ABAP developer and a Basis administrator should run before releasing a transport request, and the checks after import, so production changes are predictable.
0 of 33 items complete
12 critical items still open - these are the highest-risk gaps.
Request contents
Quality checks before release
Dependencies and ordering
Release and approval
Import and rollback
Every critical item must be ticked before release. A request that misses a critical item should not be released, because a failed import in production is far more expensive than a delay.

How to use the checklist
Work through the groups in order and tick each item. Items marked critical are release blockers. Keep one completed checklist per request, and attach it to the change ticket as evidence. The page can export your ticked list to PDF or Excel for the audit file. For emergency fixes, still run the critical items; they take minutes and prevent the second emergency.
Transport basics worth remembering
A workbench request carries repository objects such as programs, classes and dictionary objects, while a customizing request carries client-dependent configuration. A request contains one or more tasks, one per developer, and tasks must be released before the request. Releasing exports the objects to the transport directory, and the import into other systems happens through STMS. Releasing does not import, and release is not reversible, so check first.
Typical failure causes
Common causes of import errors are a dictionary object missing from the request, a dependent request not imported first, an inactive object, a changed table structure whose conversion fails with data in it, and an enhancement that does not exist in the target system. A subtle one is a function group or class activated in development but missing an include. Use the object list in SE09 and the cross-reference tools to check completeness.
Production control
In regulated manufacturing, aerospace and defense environments, auditors expect to see who changed what, who approved it and what testing was done. Keep a link between the transport number, the ticket and the test evidence. Segregation of duties matters: the developer who wrote the change should not be the one who approves its import into production. Use the system change option and role design to enforce it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between releasing and importing?
Releasing a request exports its objects from the source system to the transport directory and locks the request. Importing, normally done through STMS, applies those objects to a target system. A released request can be imported many times into different systems.
What does import return code 8 mean?
In STMS, return code 0 means success, 4 means warnings, 8 means errors and 12 or higher means a serious failure such as an export or import step that could not finish. Always open the import log and fix the cause of 8 and above before retrying.
Can I fix a transport after release?
No, a released request cannot be changed. You create a new request with the corrected objects and import it afterwards, in the right order. This is why a pre-release checklist saves so much time compared with correcting mistakes after the fact.
How do I find missing objects in a request?
Use the object list of the request in SE09, run a where-used list for custom objects you changed, and check dictionary dependencies. The Code Inspector can flag references to objects that are not in the target system. Another developer reviewing the list also helps.
