Component Price Escalation BOM Impact Calculator
A supplier price increase letter often quotes a percentage on a part family, not on your product. This calculator converts it into what matters: the change in unit cost, the margin, and the profit you lose each year, with or without a pass-through to your customers.

How to use it
Enter the current unit cost and selling price, and the purchased material cost per unit. Set the share of that material cost that falls under the affected supplier or part family, and the percentage increase announced. Choose how much of the increase you can pass to customers and enter the annual volume. The calculator shows the cost increase per unit, the new margin and the annual profit impact.
The formula
Cost increase per unit equals material cost, times the affected share, times the price increase. New unit cost adds that to the current unit cost. New price adds the passed-through portion of the increase to the current price. Margin is price minus cost over price. Annual profit impact is the change in profit per unit times annual volume.
Reading the result
A modest percentage on a part family can move margin by several points because it applies on top of a thin base. Compare the new margin against your pricing floor. The chart shows how steeply margin falls with each point of supplier increase, which helps in negotiation: you can show the supplier or customer exactly where your limit is.
Common mistakes
People apply the percentage to the entire BOM, overstating the impact, or to the entire unit cost, ignoring that labor and overhead do not change. Another mistake is assuming 100 percent pass-through when contracts fix price for the year. Finally, remember that the purchase price variance in your ERP will show the increase only when the standard cost is updated or receipts arrive at the new price.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the affected material share?
Run a where-used on the parts covered by the notice, extend by quantity per product and sum the cost. Divide by the product's total purchased material cost to get the share.
Can I pass the whole increase on?
Only if your contracts permit it. Many customer agreements limit price changes to specified windows or require index-linked clauses, so check terms before assuming a pass-through.
Should I update standard cost immediately?
Follow your costing policy. Many companies update standards on a schedule and carry the difference in purchase price variance in the meantime, so the margin shows up later than the actual increase.
How do I model a volume drop?
Run the calculator again with the lower expected volume and compare annual profit. The effect of price elasticity is not built in, so test a few scenarios.
If your ERP carries standard costs and purchase price variance, Netray can help show which products take the biggest hit from a supplier notice before the next costing run.
