IATF 16949 Product Audit and Process Audit Checklist (Worksheet)
This worksheet combines the two audit types IATF 16949 asks for beyond the quality management system audit: the product audit and the manufacturing process audit. It has sample size and findings columns and calculates a nonconformance rate per line and overall, so you can export the result to PDF as the audit record.

A product audit checks finished product against all specified requirements at an appropriate stage (IATF 16949 clause 9.2.2.3). A process audit checks that a manufacturing process runs as defined, and many OEMs expect the VDA 6.3 method. Sampling is your decision: record the rationale.

How to use the product and process audit worksheet
Plan your audit from the audit schedule, then copy the lines you need. For a product audit, take finished goods or product at the stage you define and verify all characteristics, packaging and function, not just the inspection plan items. For a process audit, follow the process flow and check each step against the control plan, the work instruction and the PFMEA. Fill the sample size and the number found nonconforming, pick a result and write a specific finding with enough evidence that another person could find it again. Assign an owner, then raise a corrective action for every nonconformance.
- Replace the example rows with items from your control plan
- Record what you looked at, not only what you concluded
- Use the Observation result for risks that are not yet nonconformities
- Keep the exported file with your audit schedule evidence
Product audit versus process audit versus layered process audit
A product audit looks at the output: dimensions, appearance, function, labels. A process audit looks at how it is made. Layered process audits are short, frequent checks by supervisors and managers at the station, and many customers require them for high risk characteristics. They complement the two annual style audits rather than replace them. Auditors for IATF 16949 internal audits should be competent in the standard, the customer-specific requirements, the auditing method and the process audited. If you need training for internal auditors, check that the course covers customer-specific requirements and the VDA 6.3 method if your customer asks for it.
Sampling and how to read the nonconformance rate
There is no single mandated sample size. Base it on risk: high severity characteristics, new processes and past complaints justify more samples. A rate of 0% on a small sample does not prove compliance, and a 20% rate on 5 pieces tells you to widen the audit immediately. Use the rate to prioritise, not to grade people. If a line shows a major nonconformance, follow your nonconforming product procedure, contain the affected stock and start root cause analysis, for example with an 8D report.
Common mistakes
Auditors often inspect only what the inspection plan already covers, so the product audit finds nothing new. Another mistake is auditing the paperwork instead of watching the process happen. A third is a finding like 'procedure not followed' with no evidence, which cannot be closed properly. Write findings as requirement, evidence and gap, and always confirm that the audit programme covers every shift and every process over the cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often must a product audit be done in IATF 16949?
IATF 16949 does not give a fixed frequency. You define it in your audit programme based on risk, customer requirements and performance, and the programme must cover all processes and shifts. Customer-specific requirements may set a minimum.
Is VDA 6.3 mandatory for process audits?
IATF 16949 requires the manufacturing process audit method to be appropriate, and German OEMs expect VDA 6.3. Other customers accept your own method. Check your customer-specific requirements before choosing.
What should a product audit include besides dimensions?
Check all specified requirements: dimensions, material and cleanliness where relevant, appearance, functional performance, packaging, labeling and traceability marking. Compare with the approved master samples and the control plan.
Can one person do both audit types?
Yes, if they are competent and independent of the activity audited. The auditor must not audit their own work. In small plants, use auditors from other departments or a qualified outside resource.
If audit findings, calibration records and nonconformance data sit in different systems, Netray can add a private AI layer on your own infrastructure that pulls the evidence together before each audit.
