Infor LN bdbpre and bdbpost Table Copy Command Generator
bdbpre exports LN tables of one company to a sequential dump and bdbpost loads that dump into another company. This generator writes the table list file, the UNIX or Windows commands and the follow-up steps for copying general data such as tcmcs001 or tccom100 from a source to a target company on Baan IV or Infor LN.
Fill in
-n loads without reference checks. Clear it to load with checks.
1. Table list file (tables.lst)
tcmcs001 tccom100
2a. UNIX
export BSE=/u01/baan/bse export BSE_TMP=$BSE/tmp export USER=baanadm cd $BSE/tmp # export the listed tables of company 001 to a dump file $BSE/bin/bdbpre6.2 -Itables.lst -Ocopy001to901.dmp -C001 # load the dump into company 901 $BSE/bin/bdbpost6.2 -R -f -n -c901 -Icopy001to901.dmp # check the command output, then the newest files in $BSE/log ls -lt $BSE/log | head
2b. Windows (command prompt on the application server)
cd /u01/baan/bse\bin fillenv set USER=baanadm bdbpre6.2 -Itables.lst -Ocopy001to901.dmp -C001 bdbpost6.2 -R -f -n -c901 -Icopy001to901.dmp rem then check the command output and the newest files in /u01/baan/bse\log
3. Follow-up in LN
1. Check the bdbpost output and the log files in $BSE/log for errors and rejected rows. 2. If you loaded with -n (reference checks skipped), run Reorganize Tables (ttaad4225m000) for company 901 with Reference Integrity and Repair Reference Counter selected. 3. Spot check the copied tables in company 901 through their sessions.
Based on the Infor LN 10.8 procedure for copying general data with bdbpre and bdbpost. The -R and -f options are used as in the Infor example; run the program without arguments or check the Infor ES technical manual for your porting set to see exactly what they do before running against a company with data. On Windows, Infor's example runs fillenv in the bin directory and calls bdbpre and bdbpost without the 6.2 suffix, so pick those program names; the BSE path uses your installation drive, for example D:\Infor\LN\bse. Always run against a test company first and take a backup of the target tables.
Check your copy plan
Send us your table list, source and target companies and LN version, and we will flag missing related tables and shared-table risks.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use it
Enter the BSE path of the application server, the LN user to run as, the source and target company numbers, and the tables to copy, one logical table code per line. Pick the program names your porting set uses (many installations have bdbpre6.2 and bdbpost6.2 in $BSE/bin) and whether reference checks are skipped with -n. Save block 1 as the list file in the directory you run from, then run block 2a or 2b as the LN administrator. Finish with block 3. Copy into an empty or disposable target company first; bdbpost writes rows into the target tables and you should know what is there before you start.
What the commands do
bdbpre reads each table in the list file (-I) for the source company (-C) and writes the rows to the dump file (-O). bdbpost reads the dump (-I) and loads it into the target company (-c). The -n option loads without checking references to other tables, which is often needed when you copy tables in an order where the referenced data is not there yet. Because references are then not maintained during the load, Infor's procedure (written for copying general data to an archive company) follows up with Reorganize Tables (ttaad4225m000), with Reference Integrity and Repair Reference Counter, so the reference counters match the data again.
- BSE and BSE_TMP tell the tools where the installation and temp space are
- Check the bdbpost output and $BSE/log after every load
- -R and -f: used as in the Infor example; check your porting set help
Worked example
To give a new test company 901 the same currencies, units and business partners as company 001, list tcmcs001 and tccom100 (plus the related tables your scope needs), export from 001 and load into 901 with -n. Business partners reference many other tables, so a partial copy will have references that point nowhere; that is acceptable in a sandbox but not in a company users rely on. Reorganize Tables with Reference Integrity reports and repairs those references, and the bdbpost output shows any rows it could not load.
Gotchas
Table code mistakes are silent: a table missing from the list file is simply not copied. Running as the wrong user can produce permission errors on the dump or the database. Copying into a company that shares tables with another company (through company table linking) changes the shared data too, so check the data dictionary links first. Large tables need space under BSE_TMP for the dump. For whole-company copies Infor provides other procedures, so use this approach for a defined set of tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are bdbpre and bdbpost in Baan and Infor LN?
They are command-line database tools in $BSE/bin. bdbpre exports tables of a company to a sequential dump file and bdbpost imports a dump into a company. Together they copy table data between companies or environments without going through sessions.
Why run Reorganize Tables after bdbpost -n?
With -n the load skips reference checks and does not maintain the reference counters. Reorganize Tables (ttaad4225m000) with Reference Integrity and Repair Reference Counter selected checks references and repairs the counters for the target company, so later deletes and reference checks behave correctly.
Where is the Baan IV documentation for these tools?
The Infor LN online manual on docs.infor.com has a procedure for copying general data with bdbpre and bdbpost, and the Infor ES technical manuals describe the database tools for your porting set. For Baan IV, the matching Tools technical manual covers the same programs.
How do I find which tables to copy?
Use the data dictionary: Tables in the Tools data dictionary shows each table's fields and references, and the table list by package helps you see related tables. Copy referenced master tables together with the tables that point to them, or accept that references stay broken in a sandbox.
If you are setting up test companies for a private AI pilot on LN, we can help scope which tables the assistant needs and copy only those.
