Infor M3 Chart of Accounts and Accounting Dimensions Worksheet
This worksheet designs the chart of accounts and the other accounting dimensions for Infor M3 13.x, one accounting identity per row, before anyone enters them in CRS630. It keeps account type, sign, mandatory dimension rules and ownership in one place for finance and IT to agree.
| Dimension | Accounting identity | Description | Balance sheet or P&L | Normal sign | Mandatory dimensions | Valid from | Owner | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dimension 1 (AIT1) is the account; dimensions 2 to 7 are free to define per company, for example cost center and product group. Accounting identities are maintained in CRS630 (Accounting Identity. Open). Posted general ledger lines in FGLEDG carry the identities in EGAIT1 to EGAIT7. The meaning of AIT2 to AIT7 in the examples is a design choice, not an M3 default.
Get your dimension design reviewed
Send the completed worksheet and we will check dimension meanings, mandatory rules and naming against your M3 companies before setup.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use it
Pick the dimension, enter the accounting identity code and description, and for accounts (AIT1) mark whether it is balance sheet or P&L and its normal sign. In the mandatory column list the other dimensions a posting on that account must carry, for example AIT2 for cost-driven expense accounts. Add a valid-from date and an owner who approves changes. Export the sheet, review it with controllers in each company, then use it as the entry list for CRS630.
- Decide what AIT2 to AIT7 mean before coding any values
- Keep code lengths and patterns consistent per dimension
- Record who may open new identities after go-live
Where this lives in M3
M3 accounts with up to seven accounting dimensions. Dimension 1 is the account; dimensions 2 to 7 are defined per company for whatever the business needs to analyse, such as cost center, product group, project or market. Every value in any dimension is an accounting identity, maintained in CRS630 (Accounting Identity. Open). When transactions post, the general ledger table FGLEDG stores the identities in EGAIT1 to EGAIT7, which is where reports and extracts read them.
Worked example
A manufacturer uses AIT2 for cost center and AIT3 for product group. Sales account 3010 requires AIT3 so margin can be reported by product group; material consumption 5010 and maintenance 6110 require AIT2 so costs land on a line or department. Balance sheet accounts such as inventory 1510 and payables 2410 need no extra dimension. With eight rows the design is small, but the same structure scales to a few hundred accounts and cost centers.
Common mistakes
Using a dimension for two meanings in different companies makes group reporting painful. Making too many dimensions mandatory forces users to guess values. Creating accounts directly in CRS630 without a reviewed list leads to duplicates such as two spare parts accounts. Changing what a dimension means after go-live breaks history in FGLEDG. Agree the dimension meanings, the mandatory rules and the owner first, then load.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many accounting dimensions does Infor M3 have?
Seven. Dimension 1 (AIT1) is the account and dimensions 2 to 7 are defined per company for analysis such as cost center or product group. Each value is an accounting identity, and the general ledger table FGLEDG stores them in EGAIT1 to EGAIT7.
Where is the chart of accounts maintained in M3?
Accounts and other dimension values are accounting identities maintained in CRS630 (Accounting Identity. Open). Design the list first, for example with this worksheet, then enter or load it and check that the dimension rules behave as expected in a test company.
Should every account require a cost center?
No. Balance sheet accounts usually do not need one. Require cost center on expense accounts where cost responsibility matters and product group on revenue and cost of sales accounts where margin analysis matters. Too many mandatory dimensions slow entry and invite guessed values.
How do I report on M3 dimensions?
Posted lines in FGLEDG carry EGAIT1 to EGAIT7, so reports can group by any dimension. Keep the meaning of each dimension consistent across companies so group reporting can combine them without mapping tables.
If controllers want to ask M3 finance questions by account and dimension in plain English, on your own servers, we can set up a private assistant over FGLEDG.
