Oracle EBS 12.2 Disk Space Calculator for Installation on Linux

This calculator sizes application and database tier storage for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2, counting both editions of the application file system, fs_ne, retained logs, the Rapid Install stage, database growth and on-disk backups. Use measured sizes from an existing install where you have one.

The 12.2 file system layout

Oracle E-Business Suite Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install for 12.2 describes the dual file system. Rapid Install creates two complete application tier file systems, fs1 and fs2, each holding the application code and technology stack (APPL_TOP, COMMON_TOP, the Oracle Fusion Middleware home and the 10.1.2 tools home). At any time one is the run edition and the other is the patch edition used by adop. A third, non-editioned file system, fs_ne, holds data that must not be duplicated between editions, such as concurrent request logs and output (APPLCSF) and adop patch logs. That is why the calculator counts the edition size twice and fs_ne once per copy.

  • Per copy = 2 x edition size + fs_ne + monthly growth x retention
  • Shared application tier: one copy for all nodes; not shared: one copy per node
  • Database = today x (1 + growth)^years x (1 + edition overhead)

How to use it

If you have a 12.2 environment at the target release, run du -sh against fs1 and fs_ne and enter those numbers instead of the defaults. Pick shared if the application tier nodes mount the same file system over NFS or a cluster file system; pick not shared if each node has its own copy. Enter the current database size, a growth rate from the last year or two of history, and how many full backups you keep on local disk. Headroom covers patching peaks: adop prepare and fs_clone write to the patch file system, and large patches temporarily consume extra space in the database for patch-edition objects until cleanup runs.

Worked example

With the defaults on a shared application tier: 2 x 70 + 40 + 5 x 3 = 195 GB of application storage. The database grows from 500 GB at 15 percent for three years to about 760 GB, and 5 percent edition overhead takes it to about 798 GB. Two on-disk backups add about 1,597 GB. With the 90 GB stage and 25 percent headroom, the total to provision is about 3,350 GB. If the two application nodes are not shared, application storage doubles to 390 GB and the total rises by about 244 GB. Backups usually dominate, so moving them to a separate backup target is the biggest lever.

Gotchas

Do not size from Oracle's minimums alone; those are for a fresh install and do not include your data, logs or patch history. See the installation guide for your release for the current minimum figures. Log directories under fs_ne grow fast if Purge Concurrent Request and/or Manager Data is not scheduled. adop cleanup must run after each cycle, or old editions and dropped objects keep space in the database. Also allow space on the database tier for the Oracle home, archive logs if the database runs in ARCHIVELOG mode, and temporary tablespace during the upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are fs1, fs2 and fs_ne in Oracle EBS 12.2?

fs1 and fs2 are two complete copies of the application tier file system. One is the run edition used by users, the other is the patch edition that adop patches online; they swap at cutover. fs_ne is the non-editioned file system for data that is not duplicated, such as concurrent request logs, output and patch logs.

How much disk space does Oracle EBS 12.2 need?

The installation guide for your release lists minimums for the stage area, application tier and database tier. Real environments need more: two file system editions, fs_ne, your database with growth, backups and headroom. Use this calculator with sizes measured on an existing 12.2 install for a defensible number.

Should the application tier file system be shared across nodes?

A shared application tier file system means patching and cloning touch one copy, and storage is counted once. It needs a reliable shared file system such as NFS. Non-shared means each node holds its own fs1, fs2 and fs_ne, which multiplies storage and patching work by the number of nodes.

What are the main steps to install EBS 12.2 on Linux?

Check certification and OS prerequisites, create the OS users and groups, download the media and build the stage with buildStage.sh, then run Rapid Install (rapidwiz) to create the database and both file systems. Afterward apply the latest AD/TXK and RUP with adop. Size storage before building the stage.
