Starting point only. A PQR records what was actually done and tested. Do not edit it after the fact to widen ranges. Follow the acceptance criteria and specimen counts in the code you qualify to.

Qualification records under control

Optional: ask how test records and certificates can be linked to materials and orders.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Record what was actually used on the test coupon, not what was planned: base metal, thickness, filler, position, preheat and measured parameters. Then enter the tensile, bend and any impact results from the lab report. Select the overall result and collect signatures. Save the PDF in the qualification file.

  • Record actual, not target, parameters
  • Attach the lab report and radiograph
  • Keep the coupon identification
  • Link the PQR to each WPS that relies on it

Tests that prove a procedure

Groove weld PQRs typically require transverse tension tests and guided bend tests, and impact tests when the material or service demands them. Pass criteria depend on the code. For example, tensile strength must meet the minimum specified for the base metal, and bends must show no open discontinuities beyond a specified size.

From PQR to WPS

A single qualified PQR supports a range of thickness, diameter and parameters defined by the code. Write each WPS inside those ranges. Changing an essential variable such as process, base metal group or filler classification beyond what the code allows needs a new PQR.

Common mistakes

Auditors find PQRs that list planned values instead of measured ones, miss the heat input, lack lab traceability or have no signature. Another error is reusing a PQR after an essential variable change.

  • Planned values entered as actual
  • Missing lab report reference
  • No coupon identification
  • Unsigned certification block

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a PQR for every WPS?

No. One PQR supports every WPS whose variables fall inside the ranges the code allows from that test. You need a new PQR when you change an essential variable beyond those allowances.

Can I edit a PQR later?

A PQR is a record of a test already performed, so it should not be changed to widen ranges. Clerical corrections are possible with documented review. New conditions require a new test and a new PQR.

What mechanical tests are common?

Transverse tensile and guided bend tests are standard for groove welds. Charpy impact, hardness and macro examination are added when the material, temperature or specification demands them. The code defines specimen numbers and acceptance.

Who certifies a PQR?

The manufacturer or contractor certifies that the record is correct, usually via a signature from the welding engineer, often with a lab and a witness. Some projects require third party or authorized inspector witness of the test.

Netray can help organize PQR, WPS and test certificates alongside material traceability in your ERP or document system.
