SAP B1 Moving Average vs FIFO Valuation Calculator

SAP Business One lets you choose a valuation method per item, including moving average, standard and FIFO. The choice moves profit between periods when purchase prices change. This calculator makes the difference visible on a small example before you commit.

Assumes quantity sold does not exceed total stock and no receipts happen between sales. Real moving average recalculates on every receipt.

How to use it

Enter two receipts: an older layer at one cost and a newer layer at another. Set how many units you sell and the selling price. The tool reports cost of goods sold, gross profit and remaining stock value under moving average and FIFO side by side.

The math

Moving average cost = total value of stock divided by total quantity. COGS = quantity sold x that cost. FIFO consumes the oldest layer first: COGS = minimum of sold and layer 1 quantity x layer 1 cost, plus any remainder at layer 2 cost. Remaining stock value is total purchased value less COGS under each method.

  • Rising costs: FIFO shows lower COGS
  • Falling costs: FIFO shows higher COGS
  • Over the whole life of stock both methods total the same

Choosing a method

Moving average is simple, smooths price swings and suits many distributors. FIFO tracks cost layers and can suit items with shelf life or traceability. Standard costing suits repetitive manufacturing with variance analysis. Before changing a method on live items, discuss the accounting and audit impact with your finance team and partner, because the system restricts changes once transactions exist.

Common mistakes

Comparing methods on one sale and concluding one is better, forgetting that the difference reverses when prices fall, and ignoring negative inventory, which distorts averages. Keep stock accurate and receipts posted before valuation-sensitive sales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which valuation methods does SAP Business One offer?

Item master valuation methods include moving average, standard and FIFO, with serial and batch based costing available for tracked items in some setups. The options depend on your version and localization.

Can I switch an item's method later?

Generally only before transactions exist, or via a controlled process. Check SAP documentation and consult your partner, since changing it affects postings and audit trail.

Is FIFO always more profitable?

No. FIFO shows higher profit only when purchase costs are rising. When costs fall, FIFO charges the older, higher cost to sales, so profit is lower than moving average.

Why use a slider for quantity sold?

Because the gap between methods changes shape once sales cross the first layer. Sliding it shows the crossover point and how COGS diverges.
