SAP Storage Type Design Worksheet

Storage type design drives everything downstream in SAP WM and EWM: putaway, picking, replenishment and counting. This worksheet lets you compare types side by side and see capacity and planned utilization before you configure anything.

Use one row per storage type. Add the planning unit that matches your design, such as pallets or cartons. Utilization above about 85 percent in reserve types usually leaves too little room for putaway flexibility.

Slotting analysis from your data

Optionally send an anonymized stock extract and we will show how a data-driven slotting proposal compares with your sheet.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the worksheet

Add one row per storage type with its code, behaviour, putaway and removal strategy. Enter the number of bins and the units each bin holds. Enter the planned stock from your slotting or inventory analysis. The sheet computes total capacity and planned utilization per row and for the whole warehouse. Export to Excel to share with the warehouse team and attach the result to the design document.

Design principles behind the columns

A storage type represents a physical area with one storage logic. Separate types when the strategy, equipment or control differs. Fixed bin and shelf types support picking, while rack and bulk types hold reserve stock. Staging and block types hold stock that is not available for normal removal. Keep pick types small and reserve types large, and use replenishment to link them. Match putaway and removal strategies to the way the stock is consumed.

  • Separate types for different equipment or control.
  • Pick types small, reserve types large.
  • Blocked and staging areas as their own types.
  • Choose removal strategies from product shelf life and demand.

Reading utilization and avoiding mistakes

Utilization shows how much of the planned capacity is occupied by stock. Reserve rack types above 85 percent get hard to operate, because the search for a suitable empty bin becomes long. Pick types below 40 percent waste walking distance. A common mistake is to size bins for average stock instead of peak stock. Use a seasonal peak with some buffer, then validate against actual SKU dimensions with the bin capacity calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this apply to both WM and EWM?

Yes for the planning logic. Classic WM and EWM both use storage types, sections and bins. The customizing objects and some strategy names differ, so use the sheet for design and check names in your system.

How many storage types should I plan?

Enough to separate different storage logic and equipment, and no more. Dozens of nearly identical types make search sequences and reporting harder. Use sections and bin types for finer variation inside one type.

Where do I get planned stock numbers?

From stock history, peak inventory per product group and growth plans. Use stock per storage type from the current system, then apply expected changes. Avoid using the current average only.

Can I export my design?

Yes. Export to Excel, CSV or PDF from the toolbar. Excel is best for working sessions, PDF for sign-off.

If you want these designs checked against your real stock and movement data, we can build a private assistant on your ERP data that proposes slotting and bin sizing from history.
