SAP Handling Unit Label Template (SSCC and GS1)
Handling unit labels connect the physical pallet or carton with its record in SAP. This template turns handling unit data into a clear label layout with the GS1 application identifiers most customers ask for.

Label developer notes
Print the SSCC barcode as GS1-128 with application identifier 00. Keep the human readable text under the barcode. Confirm the check digit calculation for the SSCC and the customer label standard before the first shipment.
Approvals
The SSCC check digit in the default is an example only. Generate real SSCCs from your GS1 company prefix and the number range in SAP. Always follow the customer's labeling specification.
Label data extract
Optional: we can outline how to build a read-only extract of handling unit data for label and EDI use.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the template
Enter the shipper, ship-to and delivery data, then the material, batch, quantity, weight and the SSCC. The preview shows the content table and the barcode data lines in the order labels normally carry them. Export to PDF for a review with the customer or to Word for the label developer. It also works as a specification for a Smart Forms or Adobe form change.
What the identifiers mean
The SSCC, application identifier 00, identifies one logistics unit worldwide, and has 18 digits including a check digit. The GTIN, identifier 01, identifies the trade item. Batch uses identifier 10, and the count of items in the unit uses identifier 37. Customers often add the ship-to location or purchase order, so confirm their specification. In SAP, the handling unit has an internal number that is separate from the SSCC and both can appear on the label.
- 00 for SSCC
- 01 for GTIN
- 10 for batch
- 37 for count of items
Common label mistakes
Frequent problems are a wrong check digit, a number range that overlaps with another plant, and barcodes too small to scan. Another common issue is mixing the internal handling unit number with the SSCC. Printing the label before the handling unit is final also creates duplicates when the pack is changed. Print at the end of packing and test scans with the real scanners and the real customer receiving system.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an SSCC?
The Serial Shipping Container Code is an 18 digit GS1 number that uniquely identifies a logistics unit such as a pallet. It includes an extension digit, your company prefix, a serial reference and a check digit.
Is the SSCC the same as the SAP handling unit number?
Not necessarily. The handling unit number is the internal identifier in SAP. The SSCC is the external identifier on the label. SAP can generate or map an SSCC to the handling unit through external identification settings.
Which barcode format is used?
GS1-128 is common for logistics labels with application identifiers. Some customers also require 2D codes. Use the specification from the customer or the industry standard they follow.
Can I use this as an SAP form?
No. It is a layout and data specification. Developers rebuild it in Smart Forms, Adobe Forms or a label printing tool, and then link it to output management.
If your label data comes from several systems and keeps drifting, we can help build a controlled extract from SAP that feeds your label printing. We can do this on your own infrastructure.
