SAP WM to EWM Migration Object Mapping Worksheet
Moving from SAP Warehouse Management (WM) to Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) is a redesign more than a conversion. WM objects do not map one to one, so teams need a single list of what exists, what replaces it and who owns the decision.
| WM object | EWM equivalent | Approach | Owner | Effort (days) | Day rate | Estimated cost | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
$2,700 | ||||||||
$4,500 | ||||||||
$6,400 | ||||||||
$10,800 | ||||||||
$8,000 | ||||||||
$9,000 |
Starter rows are common examples, not a complete list. Add your custom Z programs, user exits, label forms, RF screens and interfaces. Day rates and effort are placeholders for your own estimate.
Legacy WM usage review
Optional: ask how a private, read-only analysis of your WM usage and custom code could feed this list.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the mapping
List every WM object in scope: configuration, master data, processes, custom code and interfaces. For each, write the EWM equivalent and choose an approach: rebuild it in configuration, migrate its data, retire it, or redesign the process. Assign an owner and an effort estimate, and the sheet totals cost. Review the list weekly in the project meeting and move status along as design, build and test finish. The Approach column forces a decision rather than leaving objects as vague later items.
- Include custom Z reports and enhancements
- Add every interface and label form
- Keep one owner per row
- Never leave Approach blank
Key conceptual differences
In WM the transfer order is the central movement document. In EWM, work is expressed as warehouse tasks grouped into warehouse orders, with inbound and outbound processing driven by deliveries and process-oriented storage control. EWM also supports handling units, resources, queues and wave management in the standard model. These differences mean storage control, putaway and removal rules are usually redesigned instead of copied, so budget design time for them.
Reading the totals
The totals row sums effort and cost, and the summary shows average cost per object. If a handful of rows hold most of the days, that is where risk sits, typically process redesign and data migration. A list with many rows marked Open late in the project is a signal that scope is not under control. Use the cost column as a sizing aid with your own rates, not as a quote.
Common mistakes
Most overruns come from objects that nobody listed. Walk the warehouse floor and review transaction usage logs to find real processes rather than relying on the configuration alone.
- Missing custom RF transactions
- Forgetting printing and label requirements
- Treating stock migration as a late task
- Ignoring interface changes to ERP and automation systems
Frequently Asked Questions
Is WM being discontinued in S/4HANA?
SAP has positioned EWM as the strategic warehouse solution, and classic WM is covered by compatibility scope with a limited horizon in S/4HANA. Check the current SAP Note and maintenance dates for your release before you commit to a timeline.
Can I reuse WM configuration in EWM?
Only as input to design. The structure is different, so storage types, strategies and movement logic are normally designed again in EWM. Master data such as bins can often be generated from the same source list.
Should every WM warehouse move to EWM?
Not necessarily. Simple warehouses may be better served by Inventory Management with the S/4HANA embedded or basic EWM options. Choose per warehouse based on complexity and your SAP licensing.
Who should own each row?
Give each row to one named person, usually the process lead for the function. Shared ownership leads to rows staying open, so split an object if two teams share it.
If you want to inspect legacy WM transaction usage and custom code to find objects the project plan missed, we can build a read-only analysis that runs entirely on your own servers.
