How to use the reference
Search by form number or by the task, for example 'depreciation', 'research credit' or 'exemption'. Each row shows the official title, a short manufacturer-focused description and the agency that owns the form. Use it to build a year-end checklist so nothing relevant to the plant, such as Form 1125-A for cost of goods sold or Form 4562 for equipment additions, is missed by the outside preparer.
Forms that depend on ERP data
Several forms are only as good as your ERP extracts. Form 1125-A needs inventory and purchases by period. Form 4562 needs the fixed asset additions with in-service dates. Form 6765 needs qualified wages, supplies and contract research costs tagged by project. Planning those extracts in advance shortens the close.
- COGS: opening and closing inventory, purchases, direct labor
- Depreciation: additions, disposals, classes, in-service dates
- R&D credit: wages and supplies by qualified project
- Sales tax: exemption certificates on file by customer and state
Common mistakes
Companies commonly confuse the customer's exemption certificate, which the seller collects and keeps, with a form filed by the seller. Another frequent miss is skipping Form 3115 when changing accounting methods; many method changes need IRS consent or automatic change procedures rather than just starting the new method on the return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Texas sales tax exemption form 01-339 filed with the state?
No. The purchaser gives the exemption certificate to the seller, and the seller keeps it in its records to support the nontaxable sale. It is not filed with the Comptroller unless asked during an audit.
Which form claims the federal R&D credit?
Form 6765, Credit for Increasing Research Activities, computes the credit and then flows to Form 3800, General Business Credit. Qualified small businesses may also use Form 8974 to apply a portion against payroll tax.
Do all manufacturers need Form 720?
No. Form 720 applies only to businesses that owe federal excise taxes, which hits specific products and activities. Confirm with a tax professional whether any of your products fall under an excise tax category.
Where do Section 179 deductions go?
They are elected on Form 4562, Part I, and flow to the main return. The form also reports bonus depreciation and regular MACRS deductions for the year.
If your close process still depends on manual extracts for these forms, Netray can discuss building read-only reports from your ERP.
