Section 174 R&D Expensing vs Amortization Calculator
For several years manufacturers had to capitalise research and experimental costs and amortize them over five years domestically or fifteen abroad. Current law allows domestic research to be expensed again. This tool shows the difference in deductions and cash taxes.
Your numbers
Engineering wages, prototype materials, contract research and allocable overhead incurred in the US.
Research performed outside the US, which stays on a 15-year amortization.
Your results
Rules for domestic research costs changed for tax years after 2024 and transition elections exist for prior-year balances. Treat this as a timing illustration and confirm treatment with your tax adviser.
Extra year-one deduction and cash benefit vs domestic R&D spend
Sweeps Domestic research costs this year from 0 to 5000000, holding your other inputs fixed.
Research cost pool report from your ERP
Optional: a read-only report that totals qualifying engineering labour and prototype material by project.

How to use it
Enter this year's domestic and foreign research spend. The domestic amount is what the calculator treats as eligible for immediate expensing, and the comparison column treats it as if it had been amortized over five years with the midyear convention, which gives a 10 percent first-year deduction. Foreign costs always use fifteen years with the midyear convention, so only one thirtieth is deducted in year one. Set your combined tax rate to turn the extra deduction into a cash timing effect.
Method and what counts
Section 174 costs are broader than the R&D credit. They include wages for engineers and technicians, supplies and prototype material, contract research (65 percent of payments to outside parties under the credit, but generally full under 174 rules) and an allocation of overhead. Software development is treated as research. The annual deduction under amortization is cost divided by the life, with a half year in the first and last years.
- 5-year domestic: 10, 20, 20, 20, 20 and 10 percent across six tax years
- 15-year foreign: one thirtieth in year one, one fifteenth after
- Expensing: 100 percent of domestic cost in the year incurred
- Credit under Section 41 is a separate calculation
Worked example and common mistakes
With 2,000,000 of domestic research, amortization deducts 200,000 in year one, while expensing deducts 2,000,000. The extra deduction is 1,800,000 and at a 25 percent rate the timing benefit is 450,000 of cash tax. Mistakes include treating the timing benefit as a permanent saving, forgetting that capitalised balances from earlier years still follow their own schedules unless an election accelerates them, and not tracking research cost pools by project in the ERP so the study can be supported.
Tracking research costs in the ERP
A tax position is only as strong as the project cost data behind it. Set up project or internal order codes for qualifying engineering work, keep labour time recorded against them and tag prototype material issues. SAP internal orders, Epicor job costs and NetSuite projects can all produce the cost pool report an auditor will ask for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this replace the R&D tax credit?
No. The Section 41 credit is a separate computation with its own base amount and qualification tests. A cost can be expensed under Section 174 and also support the credit, though the credit rules reduce the deduction in some situations, so model both.
Why is the benefit only timing?
Total deductions over the life of the cost are the same either way. Expensing moves them earlier, so you pay less tax now and more later only if the costs would otherwise have been deducted in later years. Growth in R&D spend keeps the benefit going.
Are foreign costs expensed too?
Under the model used here, foreign research stays on a fifteen year amortization. Confirm the current rules and any transition election, because the treatment of foreign and previously capitalised balances is detailed.
What about prior-year capitalised costs?
Costs capitalised in earlier years continue to amortize on their schedules unless a transition election lets you deduct the remaining balance sooner. This calculator covers the current-year cost only, so model the carryover separately.
