QBI Deduction Calculator for Manufacturers: W-2 Wage and UBIA Limit

Owners of manufacturing pass-throughs can deduct up to 20 percent of qualified business income, but high earners are limited by W-2 wages and the basis of property. This calculator applies those limits.

Net income from the qualified trade or business after the deductible part of self-employment tax, SE health insurance and retirement contributions.

$

Wages allocable to the qualified business, subject to the W-2 reporting rules.

$

How to use it

Enter qualified business income, W-2 wages paid, the unadjusted basis of qualified property, and taxable income. The tool computes the tentative 20 percent amount, the two alternative limits and the overall cap tied to taxable income. The deduction is the smallest of those, and the tax saving is the deduction times your marginal rate. The sweep chart shows where extra wages stop adding to the deduction because the 20 percent amount becomes the binding limit.

The method

For an owner above the threshold, the deduction is limited to the lesser of 20 percent of QBI or the greater of 50 percent of W-2 wages, or 25 percent of wages plus 2.5 percent of UBIA. The result is also capped at 20 percent of taxable income minus net capital gain. A capital-intensive plant with modest wages often benefits from the UBIA alternative, while a labour-heavy shop benefits from the wage test.

  • Tentative = 20% x QBI
  • Limit = max(50% x wages, 25% x wages + 2.5% x UBIA)
  • Cap = 20% x (taxable income - net capital gain)
  • Deduction = minimum of the three

Worked example and common mistakes

With QBI of 1,800,000, wages of 700,000 and UBIA of 4,000,000: tentative is 360,000, the wage test is 350,000 and the property test is 275,000, so the limit is 350,000. Taxable income cap is 300,000, so the deduction is 300,000 and saves about 111,000 at 37 percent. Mistakes include using book depreciation basis instead of original cost, counting wages paid by another entity, forgetting that guaranteed payments and owner compensation rules differ for partnerships, and ignoring services businesses that are excluded above the threshold.

Data from the ERP

UBIA comes from the fixed asset register: original cost and placed-in-service date for each depreciable asset. W-2 wages come from payroll. A fixed asset report listing cost by in-service date helps the 10-year property rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who qualifies for the QBI deduction?

Owners of sole proprietorships, partnerships and S corporations that conduct a qualified trade or business, plus certain trusts. C corporation income does not qualify. Specified service businesses face limits above a taxable income threshold.

Does a manufacturer count as a specified service business?

Generally no. Manufacturing is not a specified service trade or business, which is why many manufacturers qualify even above the threshold. Mixed businesses with service lines need separate analysis.

What is UBIA?

The unadjusted basis immediately after acquisition of qualified property, meaning the original cost of tangible depreciable property held and available for use at year end, within the longer of 10 years or its recovery period.

Is the deduction permanent?

Recent legislation made the deduction permanent and adjusted thresholds. Because details and thresholds change, confirm the current-year figures before relying on this calculator for planning.
