Africa Tax Authority and Tax ID Reference Table

When you roll out an ERP across more than one African country, the first master data question is simple: which tax ID goes in which field. This table gives the authority, the name of the ID and the headline consumption tax rate for 19 countries so you can design vendor, customer and legal entity records correctly.

Headline rates and authority names change with annual budgets and reform laws. Treat this as a starting point for master data design and confirm every rate and ID format with the revenue authority or your tax adviser before configuring tax codes. This is general information, not tax advice.

Check your partner tax IDs against live ERP data

Optional: we can review your vendor and customer master for missing or malformed tax IDs, read only.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the table

Use the search box to find a country, an authority abbreviation or an ID name such as TPIN or NINEA. Read across the row to see what a local invoice, customs entry or tax return will call the identifier. Then map each identifier to a field in your ERP. Most systems have one generic tax number field on the business partner, and that is rarely enough for countries where a company has separate income tax and VAT numbers.

  • Search by authority abbreviation, ID name or country.
  • Use the master data note column when designing validations.
  • Export the filtered rows to Excel for your data migration template.

Why tax ID design matters for ERP

A wrong or missing tax ID is the most common reason a supplier invoice is rejected in a tax audit, an input VAT claim is disallowed, or an e-invoice fails validation. In several markets, including Kenya, Egypt and Uganda, the buyer and seller IDs are transmitted to the authority in real time, so a typo blocks the document. Build format checks into the business partner screen, store the ID with its issuing country, and make it mandatory for any partner whose invoices carry input VAT.

Reading the VAT column

The headline rate is the standard rate on most taxable goods. It is not the whole story for a manufacturer. Many countries zero rate exports, exempt basic foodstuffs, apply special regimes to capital goods, or add levies on top. Francophone countries use TVA, Portuguese speaking countries use IVA. Model each rate as its own tax code with an effective date range so a change in the budget does not rewrite history on posted documents.

Common mistakes

Teams often copy the South African pattern to every country. They store one tax number, assume a single VAT rate and forget local levies. Other frequent errors are mixing up the customs registration with the tax registration, storing the ID without the country prefix, and forgetting that WAEMU and CEMAC countries share currencies but not tax administrations. Review the table with your local finance lead before freezing the design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the VAT rate in this table always current?

No. It is the headline standard rate at the time of writing. Budgets and reform acts change rates and levies, so confirm with the revenue authority or your tax adviser before you configure or change tax codes in production.

Why do some countries show two tax IDs?

Countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mauritius issue a separate VAT or consumption tax registration number in addition to the income tax number. Your ERP should store both, because returns and invoices reference different numbers.

Can I use this to validate tax ID formats?

It gives names and context, not format rules. Formats are set by each authority and change. Use it to plan fields, then get the current format specification from the authority or an official portal before building validations.

Does this replace a tax adviser?

No. It is a design aid for ERP master data. Tax treatment, registration thresholds and filing obligations depend on your legal structure and activities, so a local adviser should confirm the final setup.

If you run an ERP across several African entities and want tax IDs, rates and validations checked against live master data, Netray can run a read-only review over your vendor and customer tables.
