CMM Inspection Report Template

A CMM report is only useful if someone can see which part, which program and which alignment produced the numbers. This template captures that setup context along with a feature results table you can print or attach to the quality record.

Pre-filled feature rows are examples. Replace them with the balloons from your own drawing. Record measurement uncertainty separately if your customer requires it.

Optional review of how measured values could be loaded as inspection results.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Fill in the part, machine, program, probe and alignment fields once per part or lot, export the page, and write measured values and deviations into the table. Keep the balloon number identical to the drawing so reviewers can map each row to the print. The alignment field matters because the same part can pass or fail depending on how the datum frame is built.

What to record

Reviewers and customers usually ask five questions: which revision, which program version, was the part at temperature, how was it aligned and who measured it. The header fields answer those. Position and form results should state the tolerance zone and whether bonus tolerance was applied.

  • Program name and version, to prove the routine is controlled
  • Probe configuration and last qualification date
  • Room temperature and soak time
  • Alignment method tied to the drawing datum scheme

Common mistakes

Reports often omit the alignment method, so a later re-measure on a different fixture disagrees. Another trap is reporting only pass or fail without the measured value, which hides drift toward a limit. Record numbers, and when a result is close to the limit, consider the measurement uncertainty before accepting it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every CMM report need an uncertainty value?

Not always, but some customers and standards expect decision rules that account for it, especially near the limits. If yours do, record the expanded uncertainty and decision rule in the remarks.

Can I use this for first article inspection?

Yes as supporting data, but a formal first article report such as AS9102 has its own required forms. Attach this CMM report as the measurement evidence.

Why record the temperature?

Metal parts expand with temperature, and measurements are referenced to 20 C. Recording temperature and soak time shows that thermal effects were controlled.

How many parts should I measure?

That depends on the control plan, lot size and customer requirement. This template records one part per page, so export a copy for each part measured.

If CMM results are retyped into your ERP quality module, we can look at importing them directly as inspection results.
