Epicor PartTran Transaction Types: STK-MTL, PUR-STK, MFG-STK and More

Every inventory movement in Epicor writes a row to PartTran with a TranType such as STK-MTL or PUR-STK. The code reads as from-to, but it is easy to forget. This lookup explains each common code in plain language.

Inventory Quantity Adjustment

The table lists the common standard codes. Your release may add or label codes differently, so run SELECT DISTINCT TranType FROM Erp.PartTran in a BAQ to see what your company actually uses before building reports on this list.

How to read a TranType

A TranType has two three-letter parts separated by a hyphen. The first part is where quantity came from and the second is where it went. STK is stock, MTL is job material, MFG is manufacturing output of a job, PUR is a purchase receipt, INS is inspection, CUS is a customer, and DMR is discrepant material. So STK-MTL is stock issued to a job and MTL-STK is the return of unused material. Once you know the vocabulary, most codes decode themselves.

Using the codes in BAQs and audits

Filter PartTran by TranType and a date range to answer common questions: what was issued to jobs this week (STK-MTL minus MTL-STK), what the receiving dock put away (PUR-STK plus PUR-MTL), and what finished production received (MFG-STK). Always filter by TranDate because PartTran is one of the largest tables in the database and an unfiltered scan is slow.

  • Net issues to a job: STK-MTL minus MTL-STK
  • Receipts by day: PUR-STK, PUR-MTL, PUR-INS
  • Production output: MFG-STK, MFG-INS, MFG-CUS
  • Cycle count variances: ADJ-QTY

Common mistakes

People often sum quantities across all types and get nonsense because transfers appear as a single row that is neither a gain nor a loss. Another mistake is ignoring that direct-to-job receipts (PUR-MTL) never touch stock, so a stock reconciliation that only counts PUR-STK will not agree with purchasing. Finally, cost columns on PartTran reflect the cost method of that moment, so compare cost to GL postings using the posting date rather than recalculating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does STK-MTL mean in Epicor?

STK-MTL is material moved from stock to a job's material line, which is a job issue. It reduces on-hand quantity and adds to the job's issued quantity and cost. The reverse movement is MTL-STK, the return of unused material to stock.

Where do I see all TranTypes my system uses?

Run a BAQ or SQL query with SELECT DISTINCT TranType from Erp.PartTran. That lists exactly the codes present in your data and avoids guessing, since add-ons and configuration can introduce additional types.

Why do receipts to a job not show in stock?

Direct receipts to a job use PUR-MTL, which never lands in a bin. The material is charged to the job immediately. Stock-based reports will miss it, so include PUR-MTL when reconciling purchasing receipts.

Is PartTran safe to query often?

Query it with a TranDate range and a PartNum or JobNum filter. Large unfiltered queries over years of transactions are slow and can hurt other users, so schedule heavy analysis off peak.

Netray can add a read-only question layer over PartTran so planners and controllers can ask for issues, receipts and adjustments by job or part and see the SQL behind each answer.
