Epicor DMT Import Template Worksheet for Part and BOM Data
Data migration fails more often on sequencing and cleansing than on the DMT tool itself. This worksheet helps you stage part and BOM rows in one place, order the loads, and catch missing parents before anything touches the database.
| Record type | Company | PartNum | PartDescription | TypeCode | IUM | Parent part (BOM) | Revision (BOM) | Material seq (BOM) | Qty per (BOM) | Load order | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Use this as a planning and cleansing sheet. The exact column headers DMT expects depend on the DMT template you select and your Kinetic version, so map these columns to the headers in the DMT upload screen before loading. Load parts before BOMs, test in a pilot company, and keep the source file for audit.
Migration data check
Want a second pair of eyes on your cleansed part and BOM file before the load? Request an optional review.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the worksheet
Add one row per part and one per BOM component. Set the load order so that parts are loaded first, then BOM components that reference them. Export to Excel or CSV, then copy the columns into the DMT template you select in the Data Migration Tool and map headers. Always do a trial in a pilot company before production.
- Load order 1: part master records
- Load order 2: BOM material lines
- Check that every BOM component exists as a part first
- Keep unit of measure consistent between part and BOM
Sequencing and dependencies
A BOM line references a parent part and a component part. If either is not on file yet, the row errors. Revisions add another dependency: the parent revision must exist before material lines are attached. Plan the order on paper first. A short dry run on a few assemblies reveals most structural issues quickly.
Cleansing before load
Standardize part numbers, remove trailing spaces, fix unit of measure inconsistencies and resolve duplicates before loading. Decide whether obsolete parts migrate at all. Loading dirty data is easy, but cleaning it afterward in a live system is slow and risky, and costing may be affected by wrong types or units.
Common mistakes
Loading BOMs before parts, using different units for the same part, forgetting company on multi-company loads, and testing only in production. Another common one is trusting a column mapping from a previous version after an upgrade. Always compare headers again.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Epicor DMT?
The Data Migration Tool, or DMT, is Epicor's utility for loading and updating data in bulk from CSV or Excel files. It supports many record types including parts, BOMs, customers and open orders. Each load type expects specific column headers.
Should I load parts or BOMs first?
Parts first. BOM material lines refer to parent and component parts, so the part master must exist. Load revisions next if you use them, then material lines, and then operations and any engineering data your process needs.
Can I update existing parts with DMT?
Yes, DMT can add new records and update existing ones depending on the options you choose. Test the update behavior on a pilot company, because an update with blank cells may behave differently from what you expect.
How do I check the load worked?
Review the DMT log, then reconcile counts against your source file and spot check a sample of parts and BOMs in the Part and Engineering Workbench screens. Run a BOM explosion on a few top-level assemblies to confirm structure.
If your migration includes thousands of parts and BOMs, we can help build validation checks that run before the DMT load.
