India Industrial Electricity Bill Calculator with Demand Charges

HT and large LT consumers pay for demand as well as energy. This calculator mirrors the usual structure of an Indian industrial tariff so a plant manager can see how demand, power factor and minimum billing change the monthly bill.

How to use it

Copy contract demand, recorded maximum demand, units consumed and power factor from last month's bill. Enter the demand and energy rates from your tariff order and the minimum billing percentage. The model picks the higher of recorded demand and the minimum, adds energy, applies any power factor surcharge and duty, and returns the total and cost per kWh.

  • Rates are in Rs per kVA and Rs per kWh
  • Add fuel adjustment charges to the energy rate if separate
  • Test a lower contract demand to avoid paying for idle capacity

The structure of the bill

A typical bill has a demand charge based on billing demand, which is the higher of recorded demand and a fixed share of contract demand. Energy charge is units times the slab or flat rate. A low power factor can attract a surcharge, and electricity duty is levied on the sum. Time-of-day tariffs, peak surcharges and rebates for high power factor are not modelled here.

Worked example

With 500 kVA contract, minimum billing at 75 percent gives 375 kVA, and recorded demand of 380 kVA is higher. Demand cost is 380 x 475 = Rs 1,80,500. Energy is 120,000 x 7.2 = Rs 8,64,000. Power factor of 0.92 below the 0.95 threshold adds 3 percent, then 6 percent duty. The total is roughly Rs 11.4 lakh, about Rs 9.5 per kWh.

Common mistakes and savings ideas

Keeping an oversized contract demand locks in minimum billing even in quiet months. Ignoring power factor wastes money that capacitor banks or APFC panels would recover. Peaks from simultaneous motor starts push recorded demand up. Many plants log demand in their SCADA or ERP maintenance module to spot these spikes and shift loads outside peak windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is billing demand?

Billing demand is the kVA figure used to calculate the demand charge. It is normally the higher of the recorded maximum demand in the month and a stipulated percentage of the contract demand, as set in your tariff order.

How does power factor affect the bill?

Many tariffs levy a surcharge when average power factor falls below a threshold such as 0.90 or 0.95, and some give a rebate for values above unity-adjacent targets. Capacitor banks are the usual fix to avoid penalties.

Should I reduce contract demand?

If recorded demand stays well below the minimum billing share for many months, a lower contract demand cuts fixed charges. Check any penalty for exceeding the contract and the lock-in period in your distribution company's rules.

Is the result exact?

No. It is an estimate based on the structure of common tariffs. Actual bills include fuel adjustment, time-of-day factors, taxes and rounding. Use it for comparing scenarios, not for settling a dispute.
