NetSuite Landed Cost Allocation Calculator
Landed cost turns a vendor invoice price into the real cost of getting goods onto your shelf. This calculator shows how a freight, insurance and duty pool is split across one receipt line, the same logic you apply when you use landed cost on item receipts in NetSuite.
Your numbers
Quantity times vendor unit cost for the line you want to cost.
Your results
Planning estimate. Duty is applied to shipment value here; real duty depends on tariff classification, valuation rules and your customs broker.
Landed unit cost vs freight charge
Sweeps Freight charge from 0 to 20000, holding your other inputs fixed.
Landed cost reconciliation review
Optional: we can sketch a read-only reconciliation of allocated landed cost against vendor bills in your NetSuite account.

How to use it
Enter the value, weight and quantity of the line you care about, then the totals for the whole shipment. Add freight, insurance and handling, and the duty rate. Pick whether the pool is spread by value or by weight. The calculator returns the share of the pool that lands on your line and the landed cost per unit. Run it both ways to see how much the basis matters before you decide which allocation method to configure for each cost category.
The method behind it
The pool is freight plus insurance plus duty. Each line receives pool times its share, where the share is line value divided by shipment value, or line weight divided by shipment weight. Landed cost per unit is the line value plus its allocation, divided by quantity. Allocation by value favors cheap, heavy items; allocation by weight does the reverse. Freight usually tracks weight or volume, while duty and insurance usually track value, so many teams split the pool by cost type.
- Value basis suits duty and insurance
- Weight basis suits freight on bulky goods
- Quantity basis suits per-unit handling fees
- Always reconcile allocated total back to the pool
Reading results and common mistakes
Check the uplift percentage. A 12 percent uplift on a cheap, heavy part is normal; the same uplift on a high-value electronic part suggests the wrong basis. Common mistakes are applying duty to freight when your customs regime does not, forgetting to include brokerage and port fees, and allocating on ordered quantity instead of received quantity. Partial receipts need the pool allocated to the received lines only, with the remainder held until the rest of the shipment arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NetSuite support landed cost natively?
Yes. NetSuite lets you define landed cost categories and allocate them across item receipt lines by quantity, weight, value or manual entry, subject to your edition and feature settings. This calculator helps you decide on a basis and sanity check results before posting.
Should I allocate by value or by weight?
Use the driver that causes the cost. Freight is driven by weight and volume, duty and insurance by value. If you only pick one basis, review the outliers: small, expensive parts and large, cheap parts are the lines most distorted by a single basis.
How is duty calculated here?
Duty is the shipment value times the duty rate, then added to the pool. Real duty is set per tariff line and can include additional taxes, so treat this as a planning number and confirm with your customs broker.
What about currency and exchange rates?
Enter all figures in one currency. If vendor price and freight are in different currencies, convert at the rate you will use on the transaction first. Exchange differences between receipt and bill are a separate accounting topic.
If landed cost allocation is manual spreadsheet work in your team, Netray can build a read-only check that compares allocated cost against vendor bills and flags outliers.
