NetSuite Release Preview Regression Test Checklist

NetSuite upgrades every account twice a year and gives administrators a Release Preview account to test in first. This checklist turns that window into a structured regression test of your scripts, integrations, reports and manufacturing flows.

Critical items are the ones that stop shipping, invoicing or the close: scripts on key records, integration authentication and financial reports.

How to use it

Start the Plan group as soon as the release notes are published, not when the preview opens. Assign each later group to an owner, attach evidence (screenshots, row counts, response codes) to each item, and export the list to Excel to track it. The items are deliberately about your account, not NetSuite's standard features: Oracle tests its own product, while your scripts, integrations, forms, templates and reports are only tested by you. If time is short, finish the critical items first, because they are the ones that stop orders, receipts, invoices or the close.

How Release Preview works

Before an account is upgraded, NetSuite makes a Release Preview account available: a copy of production taken at a point in time and running the new version. It is separate from your sandboxes and is not refreshed on demand, so data you enter there is test data only. Your scheduled upgrade date, and when the preview is available, are communicated to administrators ahead of the release; take the dates from those notices, not from a previous release. The same email preference subtab used for sandbox accounts controls whether Release Preview sends email, so set it before running scripts or workflows that notify people.

Worked example

Before an upgrade, a manufacturer's admin reads the deprecation notes and searches the code for the APIs listed. Two integrations still call a SuiteTalk SOAP endpoint version listed as no longer supported, so they are moved to a supported endpoint and retested. In the preview, the invoice PDF template renders a blank tax line, traced to a template field that now returns a different format; it is fixed and printed again. The work order to assembly build test passes. One saved search with a CASE formula times out with wide date filters, so it is narrowed. Sign-off is recorded the week before the upgrade and the team watches the first morning's orders.

Common mistakes

Testing only standard features, which Oracle already tests. Not reading the deprecation section until something breaks. Testing integrations against the sandbox instead of the Release Preview account, so the new version is never exercised. Leaving Release Preview email open, so customers get test invoices. Treating a slow report in preview as a production fact without comparing the same filters. Skipping the post-upgrade watch, when the first real volume finds what testing missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the latest NetSuite release notes?

Oracle publishes the release notes for each NetSuite release in the NetSuite Help Center, usually ahead of the Release Preview window. They include new features, changed behavior and a deprecation section. Read the deprecation and changed-behavior sections first, as those are where regressions in your customizations come from.

Is Release Preview the same as a sandbox?

No. A sandbox is a copy of production you refresh and use for development on the current version. Release Preview is a separate account on the upcoming version, copied from production at a point in time, used to test before your scheduled upgrade. Do your regression tests in Release Preview.

Does the sandbox get updated to the new release?

Sandbox accounts are upgraded to new NetSuite releases too, on a schedule NetSuite communicates to administrators. Check the upgrade notices for your sandbox and production dates, and plan development work so you are not deploying from a sandbox on a different version than production for long.

Why is a NetSuite report not loading after an upgrade?

Common causes are a formula or join that behaves differently in the new version, wider data volumes than the report was built for, or a role permission change. Reproduce it with the same filters in Release Preview, narrow the date range, remove formulas one at a time and raise a support case if it is a regression.

If you want your team to ask NetSuite in plain English which scripts, searches and integrations touch an area named in the release notes, on infrastructure you control, we can set that up.
