NetSuite SuiteScript Deployment Handover Template

Scripts outlive their authors. A one-page handover tells the next administrator what the script does, where it runs and how to turn it off, which saves hours the first time it fails at month end.

Optional: a practical look at governance, error handling and deployment settings before you release.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Fill it out when a script moves to production, not months later. Record the script type, the record and event it fires on, any parameters, and the deployment status. The rollback box should be a real procedure that someone unfamiliar with the code could follow. Export it and store it with the source in version control or your documentation space.

  • Complete before the production release
  • Link the source repository or SDF project
  • List parameters and who may change them
  • Describe rollback in plain steps

What reviewers should check

Governance usage is the main technical risk. Each script type has a usage limit per execution, and map/reduce or scheduled scripts need to yield or split work for large volumes. Reviewers should also check that errors are logged with enough context, that user event scripts avoid loops by guarding on context, and that the script behaves for roles other than the developer's.

Deployment settings

A script record can have several deployments, each with its own status, audience and schedule. Testing status restricts execution to the owner, which is useful for validation. Production status runs for the audience you choose. Document each deployment and the roles it applies to, because a script that works for an administrator may fail under a restricted role.

Common mistakes

Leaving debug logging at full level, hard-coding internal IDs of records that differ in sandbox, and releasing without a rollback plan are the usual faults. Also check for hard-coded email addresses and make sure sandbox copies of scheduled scripts are not sending real emails after a refresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which script details matter most for support?

The purpose, the record and event it triggers on, its parameters, and how to disable it. With those four items, a new administrator can diagnose most failures without reading the source.

How do I disable a script quickly?

Open the script deployment and change its status, for example to Not Scheduled or Testing, depending on the script type. Document this in the rollback section so anyone on call can do it.

Should every script have a handover document?

Every script that touches financial or inventory data should. For trivial client scripts, a shorter note may be enough, but keep the same headings so the format stays familiar.

Does the template work for workflows?

Partly. Workflows have states and transitions rather than code, so use the purpose, dependencies and rollback sections and describe the states in the purpose box.

If you want an independent review of scripts before a release or a migration, Netray can discuss a code and governance review.
