Oracle Fusion BI Publisher Report Template

Most BI Publisher rework comes from a vague request. This template turns a request into a specification a developer can build and a tester can check: purpose, data, parameters, layout, schedule and security.

Oracle Fusion BI Publisher Report Specification Template

Report Specification: Open Work Orders by Planner

Report ID: RPT-MFG-014 Requestor: Production control manager Author: Functional consultant Date: 2026-10-20 Data source: SQL data model on Fusion database Output: Excel Frequency: Daily Expected volume: 500 to 2,000 per run

Business purpose

Give planners a daily list of released work orders past their scheduled completion date so they can expedite or reschedule.

Parameters

ParameterTypeRequiredDefaultList of values source
Business unitTextYesUser business unit
OrganizationTextYes

To dateDateNo

Output columns

ColumnSource table / view / attributeFormatNotes

Layout and delivery

Layout template type (RTF, Excel, e-text): Headers and footers: company, report name, run date and time, page numbers. Delivery: output to email, UCM, or shared folder as required. Scheduling: scheduled job owner, retry rules, retention of output.

Security and performance

Duty or job roles allowed to run the report: Data security: report respects the user's business unit and organization access. Performance: indexed filters, no unbounded date ranges, tested at production volumes.

A starting point for your own report specification process. Adapt headings to your project standard. Confirm which BI Publisher authoring, data model and security options are available in your Fusion release before committing to a design.

Reduce custom report backlog

Optional: see how a read-only assistant over ERP data can answer routine questions that today need a custom report.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Fill the fields at the top, then export the document and complete the tables with the requestor. The parameters and output column tables are the heart of it: list every parameter with its list of values source, and every output column with the source attribute and format. Agree these before building the data model. Ask the requestor to sign so later changes become a conscious change request.

Choosing a data source

Fusion offers several routes to reporting data. A BI Publisher data model on SQL gives control but needs care with security and upgrades. Subject areas in OTBI respect existing data security and suit self service. Web service and REST sources suit data outside the database. Pick the simplest option that meets the requirement, because every custom SQL report becomes something you must retest after updates.

Design for security and volume

State which roles may run the report and how data security applies. A report that returns rows a user is not entitled to see is a design defect, not a configuration detail. Also state the expected row count. A report designed for hundreds of rows behaves very differently when pointed at a year of history, so require bounded date ranges and filters.

  • Name the roles and data access rules
  • Bound the date range
  • Show display values, not internal codes
  • Define empty result behavior

Testing and handover

Write test cases from the specification: one organization, many, no data and maximum volume. Keep the template in the report catalog folder structure agreed with the customer and record scheduler details. After each quarterly update, rerun the same cases for custom reports. Include the owner so someone is accountable for future change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a specification for a simple report?

A short one still helps. Even a half page that names the purpose, parameters, columns and roles avoids the most common rework: building the wrong thing, or building it without the right access rules.

Should I use BI Publisher or OTBI?

OTBI is often enough for self service analysis and inherits data security from subject areas. BI Publisher is better for pixel formatted outputs, document style layouts, scheduled delivery and complex data models. Choose per requirement.

How do custom reports survive updates?

They are retested with each quarterly update. Reports built on stable, supported sources fare better than reports tied to internal table details. Keep a regression list so the check is quick and repeatable.

Who should approve the specification?

At minimum the requestor and the developer. For reports that expose sensitive data, include whoever owns security. Capturing signatures makes later change requests easier to manage.

If requesters keep asking for one more report, Netray can build a governed, read-only question answering layer over your ERP data so fewer one-off reports are needed. The specification template works either way.
