PPAP Example in Excel: Dimensional Results and Capability

People searching for a PPAP example usually want to see what a finished submission looks like. This worksheet shows the dimensional results and initial process study portion with real calculations, so you can copy the structure into your own package.

Example data for a fictional steering bracket. Characteristics 3 and 6 fall below 1.67, which is where a customer would ask for a corrective plan, 100 percent inspection or a design or tolerance review. The PSW for this example would show: part number SB-48213, revision C, submission Level 3, reason Initial submission, and a declaration that all results meet requirements, except the listed open items.

How to use the example

Replace the six sample rows with your own characteristics from the ballooned drawing. Enter nominal, plus and minus tolerance, the sample mean and the standard deviation from your initial study. The sheet computes the specification limits, Ppk and a pass flag against 1.67. Export to Excel and paste the numbers into your own dimensional results and process study forms.

What customers look for

Reviewers cross-check the PSW, the control plan, the dimensional results and the capability study against each other. They look at every special characteristic first. A common acceptance guide for initial studies is Ppk of at least 1.67 for acceptance, between 1.33 and 1.67 for conditional acceptance, and below 1.33 as not acceptable, but your customer's own criteria take priority.

  • Every ballooned characteristic appears in the results
  • Same part number and revision on all documents
  • Sample size and source are stated (often 30 or more consecutive parts)
  • Gauge used matches the MSA study
  • Out of tolerance results are explained, not hidden

What the PSW and annual items mean

The PSW is the one-page declaration that signs the package. Some people also ask what a PPAP report means in an annual context. PPAP is not an annual report: it is approved at launch and re-submitted on change. Many customers do however require annual layout inspection and re-validation, defined in the control plan and the customer-specific requirements. Keep those records as part of your quality system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PPAP report mean?

The PPAP report is the set of documents that show a supplier's production process can consistently make parts that meet all customer requirements. It includes the part submission warrant plus the supporting records for the submission level.

What is a good Ppk for PPAP?

A widely used guide for initial process studies is at least 1.67. Between 1.33 and 1.67 is often conditionally acceptable with a plan, and below 1.33 is not acceptable. Your customer sets the final criteria.

Why Ppk and not Cpk for the initial study?

The initial study uses a short run, so it reports performance index Ppk, which uses overall standard deviation. Cpk is used later for ongoing capability when the process is shown to be stable over time.

How many parts do I measure?

Typical practice is a significant production run of at least 300 consecutive pieces, from which at least 30 are used for the study, but the customer or control plan may specify otherwise. Always follow the stated requirement.
