How Much Does a PPAP Cost? Level 3 PPAP Cost Calculator
People ask how much a PPAP costs because the answer is never a single price. This calculator builds a level 1 to 5 PPAP estimate from documentation labor, CMM layouts, capability studies, testing, samples and run-at-rate, then shows what it adds per part.
Your numbers
Level 4 and 5 vary by customer. This tool treats them like level 3 plus extra documentation hours.
Each cavity or station usually needs its own dimensional layout.
Programming plus measuring all print dimensions on one part.
Measuring about 100 to 300 consecutive pieces and analysis.
Accredited lab: material certification, hardness, salt spray, fatigue, etc.
Only counted at level 3 and above.
Used to show the PPAP cost per part.
Your results
Planning estimate only. Real cost depends on part complexity, customer requirements and how many dimensions and special characteristics the print has. Replace the default rates and times with your own actuals.
Estimated PPAP cost vs number of cavities
Sweeps Cavities or tool stations from 1 to 32, holding your other inputs fixed.
PPAP estimate from your quote history
Optional: we can compare this estimate with your past PPAP hours and costs held in ERP.

How to use the calculator
Choose the submission level the customer requires, then enter the number of cavities, how long a full layout takes on your CMM, and the number of special characteristics that need a capability study. Add external lab testing, sample count and your internal rates. The result is split by cost element so you can see what drives the number. Use the chart to see how cost grows as cavities increase, since layouts are usually the biggest variable on multi-cavity tools.
- Use actual hours from the last PPAP for similar parts
- Enter the sample count the customer requested
- Add portal or submission fees if the customer charges them
- Spread cost over expected volume for a per-part view
How the cost is built
Level 1 sends only the part submission warrant, so cost is mostly labor. Level 2 adds samples and limited supporting data. Level 3 is the default for most automotive programs and includes the warrant, samples and complete supporting data, which means full layouts for each cavity, capability studies on special characteristics and run-at-rate evidence. Levels 4 and 5 depend on the customer, with level 5 requiring a review at your site. The calculator uses simple planning rules for each level that you can adjust through the inputs.
Worked example
With the defaults, a four-cavity level 3 PPAP carries about 40 documentation hours at $70, four layouts at three hours and $85, six capability studies at $180, six samples, $1,800 of testing and a $1,500 run-at-rate study. That totals about $9,000 to $10,000, or roughly 19 cents a part over 50,000 pieces. A single-cavity level 2 might come to a small fraction of that. Use ranges when quoting, because first-time submissions with rejections cost more.
Common mistakes
Quoting PPAP as a flat fee, forgetting that every cavity needs its own layout, leaving out resubmission after a rejection, and ignoring the cost of waiting for approval. Also remember that capability study time rises sharply if the process is not yet capable, because rework and tool changes happen before the study can pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a level 3 PPAP cost?
It varies widely by part. A simple single-cavity part may cost a few thousand dollars, while a multi-cavity tool with many special characteristics and external testing can reach tens of thousands. Use this calculator with your own rates to produce a defensible estimate.
What is included in a level 3 PPAP?
The part submission warrant, product samples and complete supporting data, covering the 18 PPAP elements that apply to the part, such as the control plan, FMEA, dimensional results, capability studies and test results.
Who pays for PPAP?
It depends on the contract. Many suppliers include the cost in the part price or tooling quote, others quote it separately. Agree this at quotation, along with the level required and any resubmission terms.
Why does cavity count change the cost so much?
Customers usually expect a full dimensional layout and capability evidence from every cavity or station, so inspection time and sample volume scale with cavity count. Documentation labor stays mostly fixed.
If your quote history and PPAP actuals sit in ERP, we can build a private AI layer on your own servers that estimates PPAP effort from similar past parts.
