SAP Fiscal Year and Posting Period Calculator

When your fiscal year does not match the calendar, it is easy to mix up which SAP period and fiscal year a posting date falls in. This calculator converts a calendar month to the period number and fiscal year for any start month, including the common April to March year.

Your numbers

Month where period 001 starts. January means a calendar fiscal year.

Year shift in the fiscal year variant: 0 names the year by its starting calendar year, 1 by its ending year.

Your results

Posting period

The period number from 1 to 12 within the fiscal year.

This models a simple 12-period fiscal year variant where each calendar month is one period. Special periods 13 to 16 are posted by period number rather than date, and your variant may differ. Check the variant in transaction OB29.

How to use the calculator

Choose the calendar month and year of the posting date, the first month of your fiscal year and whether the fiscal year is named by its starting or ending year. The result shows the period (1 to 12) and the fiscal year as stored in the document field GJAHR. Compare it with your fiscal year variant in OB29 before you rely on it.

  • April start: April is period 1, March is period 12.
  • Shift 0 names the year by its starting year.
  • Shift +1 names the year by its ending year.

The formula

The period equals the calendar month minus the start month plus one, with 12 added if the month falls before the start month. The fiscal year equals the calendar year, minus one when the month falls before the start month, plus the shift when the fiscal year does not start in January. For April 2026 with start April and shift 0, the period is 1 and the fiscal year is 2026. For March 2027 the period is 12 and the fiscal year still 2026.

Special periods and period control

SAP fiscal year variants usually add special periods 13 to 16 for year-end adjustments, such as audit postings. They are posted by entering the period explicitly, not by date. Posting periods are opened and closed per variant and account type in OB52, so an open period in one account type may still be closed for another. Always confirm that the target period is open before posting.

Common mistakes

Teams often forget the year shift when they build reports and compare a fiscal year in SAP with the one used in budget files. Another mistake is assuming that the document date drives the period, when the posting date does. Be careful at year boundaries: a document dated 31 March but posted on 2 April belongs to period 1 of the new year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SAP period for April in an April to March year?

April is period 1 and March is period 12. In the standard variant that has this structure, special periods 13 to 16 follow for year-end postings. Check your own variant, since companies can define it differently.

What does the year shift do?

It moves the fiscal year label. With a shift of 1 and an April start, April 2026 to March 2027 is fiscal year 2027. With a shift of 0 the same span is fiscal year 2026.

Where is the fiscal year variant defined?

In configuration, under maintaining the fiscal year variant (transaction OB29), and assigned to the company code. Posting period variants are set separately in OB52.

Can a posting go into a special period by date?

No. Special periods 13 to 16 have no calendar dates. They are used by entering the period number on the posting, and they must be open in the posting period variant.
