SAP Material Valuation and Price Unit Worksheet
Inventory valuation reconciliation starts with one rule: value equals quantity times price divided by price unit. This worksheet applies it to each material and compares the result with the ledger value, which is the quickest way to find a migration or posting error.
| Material | Plant | Price control | Stock quantity | Price | Price unit | Stock value | Value per ledger | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
$4,275 | $0 | ||||||||
$740 | $0 | ||||||||
$14,784 | $0 | ||||||||
$52,020 | $0 | ||||||||
$749 | -$0 |
Stock value is quantity times price divided by price unit, which is how SAP treats MBEW-PEINH. Materials with a price unit of 100 or 1000 are a frequent source of reconciliation errors. Quantity should be in the base unit of measure.

Optional: we can reconcile a full MBEW export against your ledger and list the materials that explain the difference.

How to use the worksheet
Add a row per material and plant. Enter the price control (S or V), quantity in the base unit, the price and the price unit exactly as they appear in the accounting view or table MBEW. The stock value is calculated automatically. If you have a ledger or balance value from the G/L, enter it in the comparison column and the difference is computed per row. Totals and the difference share update as you edit, and the whole table exports to Excel.
- Start with the highest value materials
- Use base unit quantities only
- Paste figures from MBEW or an ALV export
Price unit explained
The price unit (PEINH) says how many units the price refers to. A price of 18.50 per 1,000 pieces means each piece costs 0.0185. If someone enters the price unit as 1 by mistake, the value is overstated by a factor of 1,000. This is one of the most frequent causes of absurd inventory values after a data load, along with wrong units of measure and decimal separators. The worksheet makes the effect visible immediately in the difference column.
Standard price vs moving average
Under price control S, price is fixed until a price change or a material ledger update, so stock value changes only with quantity. Under price control V, price is recalculated on receipts, so stock value can move without a quantity change when invoices post at different prices. For reconciliation, S materials should tie closely to quantity times standard, while V materials can show differences due to invoice variances and exchange rate effects.
Common mistakes
Mixing plants that are valuated at company code level with those at plant level, ignoring special stocks that have their own value lines, and comparing a quantity from MARD with a value from MBEW at a different date all produce false differences. Keep the comparison date consistent across both sides.
- Same posting date on both sides
- Check valuation level in OX14
- Include special stock separately
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price unit in SAP?
It is the quantity to which the price in the valuation view refers, stored in field PEINH of table MBEW. Common values are 1, 10, 100 and 1000. Value equals quantity times price divided by price unit.
Which table holds stock value per material?
Table MBEW holds valuation data, including standard price STPRS, moving average price VERPR, total value SALK3 and total quantity LBKUM. In S/4HANA, MBEW remains the valuation table with material ledger tables added.
Why does the worksheet differ from my ledger?
Common causes are price unit errors, valuation at a different date, special stocks, material ledger actual costing, or open GR/IR items. Sort by absolute difference and check the biggest lines first.
Can I use this for migration validation?
Yes. Compare the value computed from migrated quantity and price with the legacy ledger total, and investigate lines where the price unit or unit of measure differs between source and target.
Netray can reconcile quantities and values across your full material master against the ledger and highlight the lines that explain the gap.
