SAP MRP Types, Lot Sizing and Procurement Keys Reference

The MRP type, lot sizing key and procurement type in the material master MRP views decide how SAP plans every material. A wrong setting means too many orders, no orders, or the wrong kind of order. This reference lists the common standard keys.

MRP types, lot sizes and special procurement keys are configured per customer and can be extended. The entries above are SAP standard keys, confirm them in your own customizing (OMI8 and OMI4 for MRP types and lot sizes) before changing material masters.

Planning parameter review

Send a material master extract and we will list materials with planning settings that look inconsistent. Optional.

How to use this reference

Filter by field to see only MRP types, lot sizes, procurement types or special procurement keys. Search for a word such as reorder or consignment to find the right key. Use the planning note to choose a setting when you build material master templates, or to check an existing material against what the planner expects. Export to Excel for training notes and data migration mapping.

How these settings work together

The MRP type chooses the planning method: deterministic MRP (PD) works from requirements, reorder point planning (VB, VM) reacts to stock level, and forecast based planning (VV) follows the forecast. The lot sizing key decides order quantity once a shortage is found. The procurement type decides whether planning creates a planned order or a purchase requisition, and special procurement overrides it for cases like subcontracting or stock transfer. The MRP controller and planning time fence then decide who sees the result and what can change.

  • PD plus EX suits made to order parts with known demand
  • VB or VM with HB suits cheap consumables and bulk items
  • ND suits items that you do not want in the planning run
  • Special procurement 30 requires a subcontracting info record and a BOM

Worked example

A plant buys M6 bolts that are used everywhere and cost cents. Planning them through PD creates thousands of requisitions. Setting MRP type VM with reorder point and safety stock, lot size HB with a maximum stock level, and procurement type F means the system raises one requisition per replenishment cycle. A high value machined housing, in contrast, stays on PD with EX so that every order ties to a real need.

Common mistakes

Setting a reorder point on a PD material does nothing for MRP except safety stock logic. Leaving the lot size on EX for low cost items floods buyers with small requisitions. Switching MRP type on a live material without resetting the MRP area, planning file entry or forecast can lead to missing orders until the next net change run. And changing a special procurement key on materials that have open orders requires a review of those orders first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between MRP type PD and VB?

PD is deterministic MRP: it plans from actual and forecast requirements, creating orders for each shortage. VB is manual reorder point planning: it orders when available stock drops below the reorder point, ignoring future requirements. VB is simpler and suits low value or stable consumption items.

Where do I set the MRP type in SAP?

In the material master, on the MRP 1 view, via MM01 for creation or MM02 for changes. The MRP type, MRP controller, lot sizing procedure and reorder point sit on that view. Procurement type and special procurement are on the MRP 2 view. Use mass change tools for large volumes.

What does lot size EX mean in SAP?

EX is lot for lot order quantity. For each shortage MRP creates an order of exactly the missing quantity, with no extra stock. It is common for expensive or made to order items. Rounding values, minimum lot and maximum lot can still change the proposed quantity.

How do I exclude a material from MRP?

Set the MRP type to ND, no planning, in the MRP 1 view. The material is then ignored by planning runs, but stock and movements still work. Make sure open demand does not exist first, because ND will not create orders for it.

If your planners spend time explaining why MRP created or missed an order, we can build a read-only assistant that explains the planning result from your material master and stock data.
