SAP Production Order Variance Calculator (Price, Usage, Rate, Efficiency)
At period end, SAP calculates production order variances (CO88 or KKS1) and posts them. Understanding what drove the number is another matter. This calculator splits the total into price and quantity effects for material and for activity, which is the usual first question from a controller.

Textbook variance decomposition to help interpret results. SAP variance categories (input, resource usage, scrap, lot size, output price) are set up in customizing and may group these differently.
Total variance vs actual hours
Sweeps Actual hours confirmed from 10 to 100, holding your other inputs fixed.

How to use this calculator
Enter the quantity produced and the standard material and hours per unit, with their standard price and rate. Then enter the actual material consumed, actual price, actual hours and actual rate, which you can read from the production order cost analysis (CO03 or COOIS, cost view). The output shows target cost, actual cost and the four variances. A positive variance means actual cost was higher than target.
- Target cost is based on quantity produced, not on planned order quantity.
- Check that actual hours come from confirmations, not from a plan value.
The formulas
Material usage variance equals (actual quantity minus standard quantity for actual output) times standard price. Material price variance equals (actual price minus standard price) times actual quantity. Labor efficiency variance equals (actual hours minus standard hours for actual output) times standard rate. Labor rate variance equals (actual rate minus standard rate) times actual hours. The four add to total variance exactly, which is a useful check.
Reading the result in SAP terms
In SAP, price effects usually show up on purchase price variance accounts at goods receipt for standard price materials, so the production order may see only the usage side. Activity rate variance can come from the cost center side, not the order. The order variance categories in SAP include input price, input quantity, resource usage, lot size, remaining variance and output price variance, determined by the variance key and target cost version. Use this calculator as the conceptual split and CKM3 or the order cost report for the posted facts.
- Large usage variances often point to BOM quantity errors or unrecorded scrap.
- Large efficiency variances point to routing standard values that no longer match the floor.
Common mistakes
Mixing units (kilograms in the BOM, tonnes in confirmations) creates apparent variances. Another is judging variance on tiny orders where setup dominates. Also, a favorable total can hide offsetting unfavorable components, so always look at all four.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which SAP transaction calculates production order variances?
CO88 calculates variances for a collective set of orders and KKS1 for individual orders in the period. The variance key on the order controls which categories are determined.
Is positive variance good or bad here?
In this calculator, positive means actual cost is higher than target, so it is unfavorable. SAP shows debits and credits on the order, so sign conventions in reports may differ.
Why is there no price variance on my production order?
With standard price control, purchase price differences are usually posted at goods receipt to a price difference account, so they do not reach the order. Moving average price materials do carry price effects into the order.
What causes labor rate variance?
A difference between the planned activity price on the cost center and the actual activity price after assessment or actual price calculation, or from mixing work centers with different rates.
Netray can read production order cost and confirmation data from SAP and answer questions like which orders drove usage variance last period, read-only and with the query visible.
