UAE VAT Return Calculator (5 Percent)
Use this calculator to estimate the net VAT position for a UAE tax period and to see how close your taxable supplies are to the AED 375,000 mandatory registration threshold. It is built for finance staff at manufacturers who need a quick, transparent check before filling the return.
Your numbers
Domestic sales taxed at the standard rate.
Exports of goods and other zero-rated supplies. They count toward taxable supplies.
Exempt supplies do not count toward the registration threshold.
Purchases and expenses on which supplier VAT was charged.
Standard UAE rate is 5 percent.
Reduce this if some input VAT relates to exempt supplies or blocked items.
Your results
Estimate only. Reverse charge, designated zones, partial exemption methods, blocked input tax and special schemes need review by a registered tax agent or the Federal Tax Authority guidance.
Net VAT payable vs standard sales
Sweeps Standard-rated sales (excl. VAT) from 0 to 2000000, holding your other inputs fixed.

How to use it
Enter your sales for the period split into standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt. Add the standard-rated purchases on which you were charged VAT, and set the share of input VAT you can recover. Choose the period length and the tool annualises your taxable supplies so you can compare them with the threshold. The primary result is net VAT payable: a positive figure is due to the Federal Tax Authority, a negative one is a refundable position or a carry-forward under the rules.
The method behind the numbers
UAE VAT at the standard rate of 5 percent is output tax on taxable supplies less input tax on business purchases. Zero-rated supplies, such as qualifying exports, carry a 0 percent rate but still allow input tax recovery and count toward the registration threshold. Exempt supplies do not allow related input recovery and do not count toward the threshold. Mandatory registration generally applies when taxable supplies over the past twelve months exceed AED 375,000 or are expected to in the next thirty days, and voluntary registration is available at a lower level.
- Output VAT = standard-rated sales x rate
- Input VAT = standard-rated purchases x rate x recoverable share
- Net VAT = output VAT minus recoverable input VAT
- Threshold test uses taxable supplies, annualised here for convenience
Worked example
A quarter with AED 900,000 of standard sales, AED 300,000 of export sales and AED 520,000 of standard-rated purchases gives output VAT of AED 45,000 and input VAT of AED 26,000, so AED 19,000 is payable. Taxable supplies are AED 1,200,000 for the quarter, which annualises to AED 4.8 million, well past the threshold. Change the recoverable share to 80 percent and see how partial exemption would raise the amount payable.
Common mistakes
Frequent errors are treating exports as exempt rather than zero-rated, which wrongly blocks input recovery, forgetting reverse-charge entries on imported services, claiming input tax without a valid tax invoice, and mixing VAT-inclusive and exclusive figures. In an ERP, reconcile the VAT control accounts to the return each period and keep the tax invoices and customs documents that support every claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UAE standard VAT rate?
The standard rate is 5 percent. Some supplies, such as qualifying exports and certain international services, are zero-rated, while others such as certain financial services and residential property are exempt. Check the Federal Tax Authority guidance for your case.
What is the mandatory registration threshold?
A business must register when its taxable supplies and imports over the previous twelve months exceed AED 375,000, or are expected to within the next thirty days. Voluntary registration is available at AED 187,500 of supplies or expenses.
Do zero-rated sales count toward the threshold?
Yes. Zero-rated supplies are taxable supplies at a 0 percent rate, so they count toward the threshold and allow input tax recovery. Exempt supplies do not count toward the threshold.
Can this replace my VAT return?
No. It is a planning and cross-check tool. The VAT return in the FTA portal has more boxes, including emirate-level splits, imports and reverse charge, and the filing must be based on your accounting records and tax invoices.
If your ERP holds the sales and purchase ledgers, Netray can help produce this split automatically from your tax codes, with the query visible and read-only.
