UAE VAT Tax Invoice and Tax Credit Note Template
UAE VAT invoices must carry specific particulars, and a missing TRN or amount in AED can put the customer's input tax recovery at risk. This template lays out the fields in a clean document you can export and adapt to your ERP print layout.

Authorisation
A starting point for layout, not tax or legal advice. Confirm current mandatory fields, simplified invoice thresholds and any e-invoicing rules with the Federal Tax Authority or your tax adviser. For credit notes, change the title and enter negative amounts if your ERP posts them that way.

How to use the template
Choose Tax Invoice or Tax Credit Note, enter your supplier details and the customer's TRN, then fill the line and total fields. The preview updates live and exports to PDF, Word, Excel or CSV. For several lines, add rows in the exported file or repeat the line fields per invoice. Keep the numbering sequential in your ERP, since gaps are hard to explain at audit. If the customer is not VAT registered, leave the TRN blank and check whether a simplified invoice applies to the sale.
What the invoice must show
The Executive Regulation to the UAE VAT law lists the particulars of a full tax invoice. The main ones are below. Always check the current regulation text or FTA guidance before finalising a layout.
- The words Tax Invoice (or Tax Credit Note) in a prominent place
- Supplier name, address and TRN, plus the customer name, address and TRN where registered
- A sequential invoice number and the date of issue, and date of supply if different
- Description, unit price, quantity, tax rate and amount for each line
- Totals in AED, with the VAT amount also stated in AED even if the invoice is in another currency
Common mistakes
Frequent errors include invoicing in USD without the AED VAT amount, using a customer TRN that belongs to a group company, issuing a credit note without referencing the original invoice, and forgetting that exports and designated zone supplies can have different treatment. Free zone customers are not all outside VAT scope, so treatment depends on whether the zone is a designated zone and on the type of goods. Settle this at order entry rather than when the invoice is printed, and capture the logic in your ERP tax codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a UAE tax invoice have to be in Arabic?
The VAT rules do not require Arabic for a standard tax invoice, and English is widely used. Some customers, government bodies or contracts may expect bilingual documents, so check your customer terms. Always confirm current requirements with the Federal Tax Authority.
Can I invoice in a foreign currency?
Yes, but the VAT amount must also be shown in AED. Use the rate the rules allow for the date of supply, such as the Central Bank rate, and keep a note of the source in your records.
What is a tax credit note used for?
It records a reduction in the taxable supply, for example after returns, price corrections or discounts agreed after invoicing. It should reference the original invoice and state the reason and the VAT adjustment.
Is a TRN always required on the invoice?
Your own TRN is always required on a tax invoice. The customer's TRN is required on full tax invoices where the customer is VAT registered. Simplified invoices follow different rules, so check which applies.
