Short answer
Epicor Kinetic ships operational reports under the Reports submenu of each module (Job Management, Inventory, General Ledger, Order Management), but the exact names vary by version, so use the menu search box to find them. When the standard report does not show what you need, build a BAQ over the underlying tables: JobMtl for shortages, LaborDtl for scrap, JobHead and JobOper for WIP, PartMtl for BOMs, GLJrnDtl for the ledger and OrderDtl or InvcDtl for sales.
Applies to: Epicor 10.x and Kinetic (2021 onward), on-prem and private cloud
How to find or build each report
- 1Open the main menu search and type the report name (for example 'shortage', 'scrap', 'WIP', 'bill of material'). Kinetic searches menu items across all modules.
- 2If you do not find a standard report, browse the Reports folder under the owning module: Production Management > Job Management > Reports, Material Management > Inventory Management > Reports, Financial Management > General Ledger > Reports, Sales Management > Order Management > Reports.
- 3If a menu item is missing, check menu security in Security Maintenance. The report may exist but not be granted to your group.
- 4For shortages, build a BAQ on Erp.JobMtl joined to Erp.JobHead, filtering released, not-complete jobs where RequiredQty is greater than IssuedQty and IssuedComplete is false.
- 5For scrap, query Erp.LaborDtl for ScrapQty greater than zero with ScrapReasonCode, joined to JobOper and Part for descriptions.
- 6For WIP, start from JobHead where JobReleased is true and JobClosed is false, and bring in cost fields from JobOper and the material and labor detail you need.
- 7For sales, join OrderHed and OrderDtl (booked) or InvcHead and InvcDtl (invoiced), with filters on date and customer.
- 8Save the BAQ, mark it shared, and in Business Activity Query Designer use Actions to generate a dashboard or BAQ report so users can run it from the menu.
Operational reports: shortage, scrap, WIP
A shortage report answers one question: which jobs need material that is not yet issued and not covered by stock? The raw data lives in JobMtl (required, issued, and the buy or stock flag) and PartBin or PartQty for what is on hand. The standard job and MRP reports each show a slice of this; a BAQ lets you combine required quantity, on-hand and open PO receipts in one grid.
Scrap and WIP are similar. Scrap is captured on labor entries (the scrap quantity and reason code), so any scrap report is really a query over labor detail. WIP is job costing in motion: costs have been charged to open jobs but the jobs have not been completed to stock. Compare standard WIP reports with the general ledger WIP balance before trusting either, because they only agree if costing and the GL posting runs are current.
-- Simple shortage logic (conceptual BAQ criteria) JobHead.JobReleased = true AND JobHead.JobComplete = false JobMtl.IssuedComplete = false JobMtl.RequiredQty - JobMtl.IssuedQty > 0
BOM, general ledger and sales reports
For bills of material, a standard BOM report in the engineering area prints a single level or indented structure for a part and revision. For where-used or multi-level exports to Excel, query PartMtl (and PartRev for the approved revision) in a BAQ; a recursive join is covered in the existing recursive BOM BAQ article.
General ledger reports (trial balance, account activity, journal detail) are under General Ledger. For custom ledger analysis, GLJrnDtl holds posted journal detail and GLJrnHed the header. Sales reports are usually better as BAQ dashboards: booked sales from OrderDtl, shipped from ShipDtl, invoiced from InvcDtl, each answers a different question, so state which one you mean in the report title.
Choosing between standard reports and BAQ
Use the standard report when it is a regulated or customer-facing output (invoice, packing slip, trial balance) and the format matters. Use a BAQ when you need filtering, grouping, export or a dashboard tile. SSRS reports can be restyled, but that is slower to change than a BAQ.
Whatever you choose, keep one owner for each management report. Shortage and WIP numbers are argued over most when two departments run slightly different queries.

Common pitfalls
- !Report names and menu locations differ between Epicor 10 and Kinetic releases, so rely on menu search rather than a remembered path.
- !A shortage BAQ that ignores on-hand and open purchase orders overstates the problem; decide whether you want gross or net shortages.
- !WIP reports can disagree with the GL if costing or the GL transaction posting has not been run.
- !Booked, shipped and invoiced sales are different numbers. Do not mix them in one sales report.
- !Shared BAQs obey Kinetic security; a user without the BAQ or dashboard permission sees an empty menu item.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
An assistant grounded in your Epicor data (ERPray is the Netray product for this) can answer 'which jobs are short material this week' by generating the same read-only query against JobMtl and stock tables, showing the SQL, and respecting the user's Epicor role. It does not replace the formal GL and invoice reports, but it removes the wait for someone to build another BAQ.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the shortage report in Epicor Kinetic?
Use menu search for 'shortage'. Depending on version, shortage views appear under Job Management reports, MRP and Material Requirements. If none fits, build a BAQ on JobMtl where RequiredQty exceeds IssuedQty for released jobs.
How do I report scrap in Epicor?
Scrap is entered on labor transactions with a scrap quantity and reason code. Query LaborDtl for ScrapQty greater than zero, group by reason code, job or part, and save it as a BAQ or dashboard.
Can I get a sales report in Epicor 10 without custom development?
Yes. Order Management and Customer Billing have standard reports, and a BAQ over OrderDtl or InvcDtl with date and customer parameters needs no code. Dashboards add charts and export.
Why does my WIP report not match the general ledger?
Common causes are un-run costing or posting processes, jobs completed but not closed, and reports that run as of different dates. Reconcile as of one date and one posting cutoff.

How to Create a BAQ in Epicor Kinetic
A BAQ (Business Activity Query) is a saved query in Epicor Kinetic that you build in the Query Builder without writing SQL. Choose the tables, define joins, select display fields, add criteria and calculated fields, test the result, then use the BAQ in dashboards, reports, BPMs or the REST API.
How-toEpicor BAQ Report: Parameters, Running Manually, Scheduling and Triggering From Code
To make a BAQ report prompt for values, mark the BAQ criteria as parameters, then build a BAQ report from that BAQ. Users run it from its menu item and click Submit; to schedule it, use the schedule options in the submit dialog so the System Agent runs it. Code can submit a report through the report service.
AdvancedEpicor BAQ Recursive BOM Join on PartMtl, Previous Operation Complete and Stale Headers
A BAQ cannot run a recursive query, so a multi-level bill of materials is built by joining PartMtl to itself once per level, or by using a function or the BOM explosion tools for unlimited depth. Previous operation complete uses a subquery against JobOper. Stale column headers usually come from the saved dashboard layout, not the BAQ.
How-toHow to build a Kinetic homepage dashboard in Epicor
Kinetic homepage dashboards are built from Active Homepage Maintenance: create a BAQ that returns the metric or list you want, add a KPI or List widget referencing that BAQ, arrange widgets on the homepage layout, and assign the homepage to a role or company so the right users see it.
Error fixFixing Epicor BusinessObjectException: BPM Directive Errors
A BusinessObjectException that says "A Business Process Management (BPM) directive has raised the following error" means a directive on that business object stopped the transaction, either deliberately via a Raise Exception widget or accidentally via an unhandled .NET error in Custom Code. Expand the InnerException on the error dialog to see the real message and the directive name, then open BPM Designer for that object and method to find the widget that fired.
How-toFixing a Slow Epicor BAQ (Business Activity Query)
A slow BAQ in Epicor is usually caused by unindexed join columns, a subquery or calculated field forcing a table scan, or the BAQ pulling far more rows than the dashboard actually displays before filtering client-side. Fix it by reading the SQL Server execution plan Epicor generates, moving filters into the BAQ criteria instead of the dashboard filter panel, and replacing subqueries with joins where possible.
