This is a generic plan structure aligned with the five APQP phases. Check your customer's own APQP and gate requirements, and adjust owners and dates to your program.

Want program status pulled straight from your ERP?

An optional review of how APQP milestones and PPAP status could be answered from your existing systems.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Replace the example values with your own program name, part number, owners and dates. The phase table and gate table are pre-built, so you only edit the cells that matter. Export to Word if you want to add drawings or customer logos, to PDF to send for approval, or to Excel to track it as a live plan. Review it at the kickoff with design, tooling, quality and purchasing in the room.

What the five phases cover

APQP is a structured way to plan a new product so quality problems are prevented, not found late. The phases run from planning and defining the program, through design and process development, to validation and then feedback and corrective action after launch. PPAP, the production part approval process, is the evidence package that closes phase 4.

  • Phase 1: customer needs, design goals, preliminary special characteristics
  • Phase 2: DFMEA, design verification, equipment and gauge requirements
  • Phase 3: process flow, PFMEA, control plan, MSA plan
  • Phase 4: trial run, capability, PPAP submission
  • Phase 5: variation reduction and lessons learned

Common mistakes

The most common failure is treating APQP as paperwork completed right before PPAP. A plan only helps if gates have real entry criteria and owners. Another is missing the long-lead items: fixtures, gauges and CMM programs often decide whether you hit the run-at-rate date. Put those on the plan in phase 2 and review them at every gate. Also keep the plan version controlled so the customer and your team see the same dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an APQP plan?

An APQP plan is the schedule and responsibility document for Advanced Product Quality Planning. It lists the five phases, the deliverables in each, who owns them, the target dates and the gate reviews, so a new product launches with quality built in.

Does the AIAG manual require this exact format?

No. The AIAG APQP manual describes the phases and expected outputs but not one mandatory form. Many customers accept any clear plan that covers the phases, owners and timing. Always check your customer-specific requirements before you submit.

How is APQP different from PPAP?

APQP is the whole planning process from concept to launch. PPAP is the set of evidence you submit to show the production process can consistently meet requirements. PPAP is one deliverable inside APQP phase 4.

Can I use this outside automotive?

Yes. Aerospace suppliers use similar planning under AS9145, and any supplier launching a new part can use the same phase structure. Adjust the deliverables to match the standard or customer you work with.

If your APQP and PPAP data lives in your ERP and quality system, Netray can add a private AI layer on top that answers status questions from your own data, on-prem if needed.
