AS9100 Risk and Opportunity Register Worksheet (Clause 6.1)
AS9100 clause 6.1 asks you to plan actions to address risks and opportunities, and clause 8.1.1 adds operational risk management. This register gives you a simple scoring model and an Excel export you can bring to management review.
| Risk or opportunity | Type | Process | Severity (1-10) | Likelihood (1-10) | Detection (1-10) | Priority number | Planned action | Owner | Due | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
160 | ||||||||||
84 | ||||||||||
108 | ||||||||||
60 |
The priority number is severity times likelihood times detection, the same method used in FMEA. Set your own action threshold, such as 100 or more, in your risk procedure. Opportunities use the same scale for effort and benefit if you prefer.
Connect risks to live ERP data
Optional: talk about surfacing late orders, rejects and overdue calibrations in a live risk view.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the register
List each risk or opportunity against the process it affects. Score severity, likelihood and detection from 1 to 10, and let the sheet calculate the priority number. Sort by the highest numbers, assign an owner and date, and record the action. Revisit the register at least at each management review and after any significant incident or audit finding.
- Tie each item to a process owner
- Score using agreed criteria, not gut feel
- Record planned action and due date
- Review after incidents and audits
The scoring method
The priority number multiplies severity, likelihood and detection, giving a range of 1 to 1000. Severity reflects the effect on product, delivery or compliance. Likelihood reflects how often it could occur. Detection reflects how well current controls would catch it. A high detection score means weak controls. The number ranks items, it does not prove anything on its own.
Operational risk topics for aerospace
Operational risk management in AS9100 covers areas such as product safety, supplier performance, counterfeit parts, on-time delivery, key resource availability, configuration control and human factors. Make sure your register includes these themes with real examples from your shop, not a generic list copied from a template.
Common mistakes
Registers go stale when they are written once for the audit. Other problems include scoring everything as medium, listing risks with no action, and treating opportunities as an afterthought. Keep the list short enough to maintain and link actions to measurable objectives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AS9100 require a risk register?
The standard requires you to determine risks and opportunities and plan actions, and to keep documented information where needed. A register is the most common way to show this, but it is not the only format.
What score needs action?
There is no fixed number. Define a threshold in your procedure, and apply judgment to any item with high severity regardless of the product.
Are opportunities scored the same way?
You can use the same scale for benefit, likelihood and effort, or keep opportunities in a simpler list. What matters is that you decide and record the actions.
How often should I update it?
At least at each management review, and whenever the business changes, such as a new customer, process, supplier or audit finding.
