A starting point to adapt to your own QMS procedures. AS9100 requires internal audits at planned intervals, defined criteria and scope, objective reporting to relevant management, and timely corrections. It does not prescribe this layout.

Track audit findings against live ERP data

Want internal auditors to sample work orders and lots directly from your ERP? Ask for a short review.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Fill in the process, criteria and scope from your audit plan, then write conforming practices as well as findings. Strong audit reports record what was sampled so another auditor can repeat it. State each nonconformity as three parts: the requirement, the evidence and the gap. Export to PDF for the management review file or to Word for the process owner to respond.

  • Cite the clause or procedure section, not just the standard name
  • Name the sample size and the period reviewed
  • Keep opinions out of the evidence statement
  • Set a corrective action due date that matches your procedure

What AS9100 expects from internal audits

Clause 9.2 of AS9100D requires audits at planned intervals to show whether the QMS conforms to the organization's own requirements and the standard, and is effectively implemented. The audit program must consider process importance, customer feedback, changes and prior results. Auditors must be objective and impartial, results must reach relevant management, and corrections and corrective actions must be taken without undue delay. Records of the program and results are retained.

Classifying findings

Most registrars separate major from minor nonconformities. A major typically means a requirement is not met in a way that could affect product conformity or QMS capability, or a systemic breakdown. A minor is an isolated lapse. Observations flag risk without citing a failed requirement. Use your own written definitions, apply them consistently and keep the classification separate from the person who made the mistake.

Common mistakes

Reports often list only problems, cite no sample, or close findings without verifying that the action worked. Auditing the same process the same way each year also hides issues. Track findings in your ERP or QMS module with a due date and owner, and review overdue actions in management review.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often must AS9100 internal audits be done?

AS9100 says at planned intervals and leaves the frequency to you, based on process importance, risk and past results. Many organizations cover every process at least once a year and audit risky or changing processes more often. Your registrar will check your program logic.

Can auditors audit their own work?

No. The standard requires objectivity and impartiality, so auditors must not audit their own work. Small companies often use a cross-department auditor or a qualified external resource to maintain independence.

Do I need to report conforming practices?

The standard does not require it, but it is good practice. Noting what was verified shows the audit was real, supports risk-based planning and gives credit where processes work. It also helps the next auditor choose a different sample.

Is this the same as the AS9100 audit readiness checklist?

No. A readiness checklist helps you prepare for a registrar audit. This template records the result of an internal audit with criteria, evidence and findings, which is the document the standard expects you to keep.

If audit findings, work orders and corrective actions sit in separate systems, we can help link them so auditors sample from live ERP data on-prem.
