Casting Nonconformance and Disposition Template

Castings fail in ways that other parts do not: hidden porosity, shrinkage found only after the first cut, inclusions that show at pressure test. This nonconformance template captures the casting specific facts so the supplier can act on it.

Use as a starting point. Repair of castings, such as welding, normally needs written customer or specification approval before it is used as a disposition.

Trend casting defects by supplier

Optional: a short review of how NCR data could be summarized from your ERP.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this template

Enter the identifying fields, choose the defect type and where it was found, then describe the defect with size and location. Print or export, add photos and sketches, and route for approval. Always record the heat or lot number, because a casting problem usually follows the melt or the mold batch, not the single piece.

Choosing the defect type

Gas porosity shows as rounded holes, often near the surface. Shrinkage is irregular and rough, usually at thick sections or hot spots. Sand inclusions are loose grains or slag pockets. Cold shuts and misruns are fill problems from low pour temperature or poor gating. Name the defect precisely, since the corrective action differs: gating and risering for shrinkage, venting and moisture control for gas.

Disposition decisions

Scrap and return to supplier are straightforward. Use as is needs engineering, and sometimes the customer, to accept the deviation. Repair of a casting, for example by welding or impregnation, is only acceptable where the specification and customer permit it, and it must be recorded. Sort 100 percent is containment, not a corrective action.

Common mistakes

Teams often write only 'porosity' with no size, location or drawing requirement, so the supplier cannot reproduce or judge it. Also avoid closing the NCR on a disposition alone. Record the cause and verify that the next lot is clean, and update the supplier scorecard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this for supplier corrective action?

Yes. Send the exported PDF with photos to the supplier and ask for a root cause and corrective action reply. If a formal SCAR or 8D format is required, copy the content into it.

What if the defect is only found after machining?

Select the machining operation in the found at field and record the cut depth. Defects exposed late are costly because value has been added, so note the cost in your own tracking.

Do I need the heat number on every NCR?

It is strongly recommended. It lets the supplier trace the melt and mold batch and lets you quarantine other pieces from the same lot.

Is this a legal document?

It is a quality record, not legal advice. Contractual remedies depend on your purchase agreement and applicable specifications.

If you track nonconformances and supplier performance in an ERP, Netray can help summarize defect trends by supplier and heat on your own systems.
