MRB Nonconformance Disposition Record Template (Aerospace)

When parts fail to meet the drawing, the material review board decides what happens to them. A good record shows what was wrong, what you propose, why it is safe, and who approved it. This template produces a clean disposition record you can attach to the NCR.

Nonconformance

Bore diameter measured 12.052 mm against a requirement of 12.000 to 12.025 mm on 4 pieces. Measured on CMM, report attached.

Suspected cause

Tool wear on finishing boring bar after extended run. Offset not adjusted at scheduled check.

Disposition

Proposed disposition: Rework to drawing Customer approval: No, within supplier authority

Technical justification: Bore can be re-bored and sleeved to restore the drawing dimension without affecting wall thickness. Wall thickness remains above the minimum.

A starting point, not a controlled form. Use your own document number and revision, and follow your quality manual for who may approve use-as-is or repair dispositions. Customer or regulatory approval is required in many cases, and the contract flow-down decides.

Nonconformance workflow in your ERP

Optional: we can review how NCR and MRB steps could be tracked against lots and work orders in your ERP.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Fill in the part, quantity, lot and nonconformance description with measured values against the requirement. Choose the disposition, say whether customer approval is needed and write the technical justification. The document includes a containment table and signature lines, and exports to PDF or Word for your records.

  • State actual and required values, not just out of tolerance.
  • Link the CMM or inspection report.
  • Keep suspect lots quarantined until the record is signed.

Disposition choices

Use as is accepts the part with the nonconformance, which normally needs engineering justification and often customer approval. Repair brings the part to an acceptable but different condition from the drawing, using a method that may need approval. Rework returns it to the drawing requirement using a standard process. Scrap and return to supplier remove it from the flow. AS9100 requires these decisions to be controlled and recorded.

Common mistakes

Dispositions approved by someone without the authority, a thin justification, no containment of related lots, and no link to corrective action. The record should answer the question an auditor will ask: how do you know no other product is affected? If the cause is not confirmed, say so and plan the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does MRB stand for?

Material review board. It is a cross-functional group, usually quality, engineering and sometimes the customer, that decides how to handle nonconforming product and records the disposition and justification.

Is customer approval always needed?

No. Many contracts let the supplier rework to drawing or scrap on its own authority, but use-as-is and repair dispositions often need customer approval. The purchase order flow-down and the contract decide.

What is the difference between repair and rework?

Rework returns the part to the original drawing requirement, while repair leaves it in a condition that differs from the drawing but is accepted for use. Repair typically needs a documented, approved method.

Does this replace my NCR form?

No. The NCR captures the finding and the MRB record captures the decision. Link them by number so an auditor can follow a nonconformance from detection to closure.

If NCRs, MRB records and rework orders live in different systems, we can help connect them to your ERP so each disposition is traceable to a lot and work order.
