Egypt ETA E-Invoice Readiness Checklist for Manufacturers and Exporters

Egypt requires taxpayers to issue invoices electronically through the Egyptian Tax Authority platform. For a manufacturer or exporter, that means structured data from the ERP, a digital signature and tight master data. This checklist helps you see what is ready and what is not.

Controls and operations

Close every critical item before go-live and before audits. The ETA updates its technical specifications and deadlines, so confirm the current version and phase for your company.

How to use this checklist

Go group by group and tick what you can prove today. The critical items are the ones that stop documents being accepted at all: registration, certificate, item codes, tax mapping and the signed JSON. Export the result and assign owners for each gap, usually finance for tax setup, IT for the signing certificate and the ERP partner for document mapping.

  • Test in the pre-production environment first.
  • Keep evidence of each completed item.
  • Rerun after ERP upgrades.

What the system expects

The ETA e-invoicing system receives invoices as structured documents, usually JSON, signed with the taxpayer's digital certificate and submitted through the portal's API. Each line is classified with a GS1 or EGS item code, and the tax structure follows the authority's tax type and sub-type lists. Accepted documents receive a UUID and a QR code that appear on the printed or shared invoice.

Reading the score

Master data is the most common cause of rejections: missing item codes, wrong customer type and unmapped tax sub-types. If your score is low in that group, fix it before touching integration code. For exporters, pay attention to customer type and the zero-rating treatment so overseas invoices do not fail validation.

  • Clean item codes before the first live batch.
  • Review rejected documents daily.
  • Reconcile accepted invoices to VAT.

Common mistakes

Teams often leave the signing token on one desktop, reuse internal IDs, or let staff cancel documents without a rule. Another is assuming the ERP vendor's connector covers every tax scenario. Test credit notes, exports and mixed-rate invoices specifically, because those are the cases where mapping breaks. Verify current technical specifications with the authority before go-live.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VAT rate in Egypt?

The standard VAT rate is 14%. Some goods carry table tax or are exempt, and certain items are zero-rated. Map each product to the correct tax type and sub-type in your ERP.

What are GS1 and EGS item codes?

They are the item coding schemes accepted by the ETA. GS1 codes come from the global barcode system, while EGS codes are registered with the authority for items that do not have a GS1 code.

Do I need a digital signature?

Yes. E-invoices are signed with the taxpayer's digital certificate before submission. Plan for secure storage, expiry tracking and a backup signer.

What happens if an invoice is rejected?

The ETA returns an error message and the document is not accepted. Fix the data, create a corrected document and track the rejected one in your exception queue. Do not delete the history.

Netray can add a read-only exception view over your ERP and ETA statuses, so rejected or unsigned invoices are visible the same day.
