IATF 16949 Audit Man-Days and Certification Cost Calculator
Automotive suppliers asking how long an IATF 16949 certification audit will take and what it will cost need a number before they ask for quotes. This calculator gives a planning estimate of audit man-days and the cost over a three-year cycle, and charts how days rise with headcount.
Your numbers
Include permanent, part-time, temporary and contract staff who work in the scope, and count part-timers as full-time equivalents.
Use the rate in your quote. Rates vary by region and body.
Your results
Planning estimate only. IATF certification audit days come from the IATF Rules and the table in force, with adjustments set by your certification body. Always confirm days and fees in the written quote.
Stage 2 audit days vs headcount
Sweeps Employees on site (effective headcount) from 10 to 2000, holding your other inputs fixed.
Audit evidence from your ERP
Optional: see how a private AI layer can assemble PPAP, FMEA and supplier records for IATF auditors.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the calculator
Enter your effective headcount, shift pattern and whether you have design responsibility. Add extra sites if remote support locations, such as a distribution site or design center, belong in the scope. Enter the audit day rate from a quote and any consultant days you expect. The tool gives stage 1, stage 2, surveillance and recertification days and a cycle total. Use it to check that quotes look sensible and to budget before you approach certification bodies.
- Count part-time and temporary staff as equivalent full-time.
- Put real quote rates in the day rate field.
- Use the chart to see how days climb with headcount.
- Treat the result as a range, not a guarantee.
How IATF audit days are set
IATF 16949 is certified through IATF-recognized certification bodies, which follow the IATF Rules. The rules set a minimum audit duration based on the number of employees, with adjustments for factors such as the number of shifts, complexity of processes, design responsibility, remote locations and the maturity of the system. Audits cannot be cut below set limits. This tool uses a smooth curve fitted for planning, so the official table and your body's calculation will differ slightly. Ask each body to show how it derived the duration.
Roadmap and cost drivers
The typical path is: gap assessment against the standard and customer-specific requirements, building or upgrading procedures, core tools (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC) in use, internal audits including manufacturing process and product audits, a management review, then stage 1 and stage 2. Expect twelve months or more from start to certificate for a company without an existing quality system, less if you hold ISO 9001. Costs beyond audit fees include training, gauge calibration, software, internal time and customer requirements. Factor in annual surveillance and the three-year recertification.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many audit days does IATF 16949 certification take?
It depends mainly on headcount, with adjustments for shifts, design responsibility and extra locations. A mid-size plant of a few hundred people commonly sees a stage 2 audit of around a week or more for a team. Ask for the day calculation in your quote.
How much does IATF 16949 certification cost?
Audit fees are days times the body's rate, repeated for stage 1, stage 2, annual surveillance and recertification. Add consulting, training, tools and internal time, which often exceed the audit fees. Always obtain written quotes from several accredited bodies.
How long does it take to get IATF 16949 certified?
From scratch, typically twelve to eighteen months. Companies already certified to ISO 9001 with mature core tools may need six to twelve months. The timeline depends on customer pressure, resources and how many findings come out of the gap assessment.
Do I need a consultant for IATF 16949?
It is not required. A consultant can speed up the gap assessment and training, but internal ownership matters more. Certification bodies may not provide consulting to the clients they audit, so keep the roles separate.
