Manufacturing Production and Quality MIS Report Template

A manufacturing MIS report is a short monthly or weekly pack that gives management the same eight to twelve numbers every period: output against plan, quality, delivery, inventory and cost. This template gives you the structure, the KPI table with the ERP source of each figure, and a blank detail section for lines and defects.

Monthly MIS Report

Company: Acme Precision Components, Plant 2 Period: September 2026 Prepared by: Plant MIS Coordinator

1. Management summary

Output was 7 percent below plan, driven by two unplanned spindle failures on the VMC line. Delivery held above 93 percent by overtime on the last week.

Pull each number from one system of record and keep the definition the same every month: OEE is only comparable if planned time is defined consistently. Add or remove KPI rows to match your plant. A one-page MIS that is read beats a ten-page one that is not.

How to use this MIS report template

Fill the fields at the top with the period's headline numbers, then use the detail tables for line-level output and the top defects. The management summary should be three sentences: what happened, why, and what you are doing. Export to PDF or Word for circulation, or to Excel to paste into your existing pack. Keep the KPI definitions fixed from month to month, because the trend matters more than any single value.

What belongs in a manufacturing production and quality report

Production and quality sit side by side because output bought with scrap or rework is not output. The usual core set is below. Each one has a clear numerator and denominator, so two people calculating it get the same answer.

  • Good output against plan: completed quantity from production orders versus the scheduled quantity.
  • OEE: availability times performance times quality, from machine states if you have MES, otherwise from downtime logs.
  • Scrap rate and first pass yield: scrap quantity over total started, and units passing inspection first time.
  • Customer rejects in PPM: rejected parts per million shipped, from returns and shipments.
  • On-time delivery: order lines shipped on or before the promise date.
  • Inventory days and cost variance versus standard: from inventory valuation and production variance postings.

Where the numbers come from in your ERP

Most MIS effort is wasted on copying figures between systems. In an ERP the production order carries planned and completed quantity, scrap is posted against the order or operation, and shipment lines carry promise and actual dates. Inventory value and variances come from the costing module. Write the source report or query beside each KPI the first time, so the monthly job becomes a refresh rather than a rebuild. Where figures come from several systems, agree one owner per KPI.

Common mistakes in MIS reporting

The most common failures are changing definitions quietly, reporting averages that hide a bad week, and listing problems without an owner or date. Show trend lines next to the month value, flag any KPI that missed target for two periods running, and make every action in section 5 carry a name and a date. Also keep the report short: if nobody reads page three, remove it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MIS report in a manufacturing company?

It is a management information system report: a regular summary of production, quality, delivery, inventory and cost figures that lets managers compare results with plan and decide what to act on. It is usually monthly for senior management and daily or weekly for the plant.

How is a manufacturing quality report different from a production report?

A production report counts output, downtime and efficiency. A quality report counts defects, scrap, rework, yield and customer rejects, and tracks corrective actions. They are best presented together so that output is judged on good units, not just units made.

Can I use this as a free Excel template for manufacturing?

Yes. Fill the fields, then export to Excel, PDF or Word. The detail tables export blank so you can fill them in your spreadsheet. For a row-by-row daily log with calculated OEE, use the production report worksheet linked on this page.

How often should an MIS report be produced?

Run a daily or weekly view for supervisors and plant managers, and a monthly pack for senior management. Use the same KPI definitions across all of them, so the monthly numbers add up from the daily ones.

If your team rebuilds this report by hand every month, we can set up a private assistant on your ERP data that drafts it and answers follow-up questions, running on-premises if needed.
