NetSuite Routing Operation Cost Worksheet

Before routings go into NetSuite, someone has to agree the operations, times and rates. This worksheet does the arithmetic so the numbers you enter are ones you have already checked.

Cost per unit spreads setup time across the lot size: (setup / lot + run per unit) / 60 x rate. The lot cost summary assumes a lot of 100, so change that figure in the summary if your lot differs. Use the worksheet to prepare data before entering it as Manufacturing Routing records.

Compare routing times to actuals

Optional: we can discuss comparing planned operation times with reported labor from your NetSuite data.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the worksheet

List each operation in sequence with its work center, setup minutes, run minutes per unit, lot size and hourly rate. The sheet works out the conversion cost per unit and the hours per lot. Compare these figures to what your manufacturing cost templates or work center rates will produce in NetSuite. Export to Excel to review with the shop floor before loading data.

  • Use run time per single unit, in minutes
  • Keep lot size the same as your standard build quantity
  • Use fully loaded hourly rates where you cost labor and overhead together
  • Re-check after any change in lot size

The formula

Cost per unit for an operation equals (setup minutes divided by lot size, plus run minutes per unit) divided by 60, multiplied by the hourly rate. Setup is a fixed cost per lot, so small lots carry far more setup per unit. For a 90-minute setup and 100-unit lot, setup adds 0.9 minutes per unit. At 10 units it adds 9 minutes per unit, which can double an operation cost.

Where this fits in NetSuite

NetSuite manufacturing routings hold operations that point to manufacturing work centers, with setup time, run rate and a manufacturing cost template for labor and machine costs. Check how your account defines run rate and whether times are per unit or per hour of output, because the unit of measure affects how you key values. Use this worksheet as a staging area for that data.

Common mistakes

Mixing minutes and hours, entering run time for the whole lot as if it were per unit, and using one lot size for all quoted quantities. Also compare the totals to actual labor reported on closed work orders. Large gaps usually mean the routing times are optimistic or setup is under-recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this match NetSuite standard cost?

It gives the conversion cost arithmetic only. NetSuite standard cost also includes materials and follows your cost template and roll-up settings. Use this sheet to check the operation portion before loading.

Should setup be divided by lot size?

For unit costing, yes. Setup happens once per lot, so its per-unit effect depends on lot size. For capacity planning use the Hours per lot column, which keeps setup as a single block.

Can I add overhead?

Fold overhead into the rate column, or add a row for it. Many shops use a loaded rate per work center that includes labor, machine and overhead.

How do I get the data into NetSuite?

Export to Excel, arrange the columns to match your import template and test the CSV import in a sandbox first. Confirm field names and required columns against your account.
