NetSuite BOM Revision Change Request Template

NetSuite stores component lists as a bill of materials with dated revisions, so a change is not complete until the effective dates and open work orders are handled. This form walks through that decision on one page.

Starting point for your change control. In NetSuite, revisions are created on the Bill of Materials record and each has effective start and obsolete dates. Verify how your account handles work order revision selection before relying on the open work order choice.

Optional: we can look at how a BOM change flows to work orders, planning and cost in your NetSuite account.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the form

Enter the assembly, the BOM record and the current and new revision names. List every component change as add, remove or change, with quantities. Set the effective start date and choose how open work orders will be treated. Collect signatures before the revision is created in NetSuite so the record always has an approved paper trail behind it.

  • One form per revision, not per component
  • List adds, removals and quantity changes separately
  • State the effective date explicitly
  • Record the cost effect, even as an estimate

How NetSuite handles revisions

A bill of materials in NetSuite can have multiple revisions, each with an effective start date and an optional obsolete date, and an assembly item can use a revision for new work orders based on date. Work orders keep the revision they were created with unless you change them, which is why the open work order decision matters. Check whether your setup uses revision control and how planning treats future revisions.

Downstream effects

A BOM change can affect more than production. Planned orders from supply planning, standard costs, purchase demand and the component picking list all derive from it. If routings change at the same time, record that. If a new component requires a purchase item, confirm it exists and has a preferred vendor before the effective date arrives.

Common mistakes

Editing the live revision instead of adding a new one loses history. Setting the effective date in the past can alter results for orders already planned. Forgetting to obsolete the old revision lets both be valid on the same date. Always test the new revision in a sandbox by creating a work order against it and reading the component list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I edit the existing BOM revision?

Only for corrections. For a real engineering change add a new revision with its own effective date. That keeps history so you can explain what built an older work order.

What happens to open work orders?

Work orders are generally created with the revision valid at that time. Decide per change whether they finish on the old revision or are updated, and record it here so planners act consistently.

Do I need approvals for every revision?

Your quality system decides. Aerospace and medical manufacturers usually need engineering and quality sign-off for each change. Smaller shops may tier approvals by risk.

Where should the signed form be stored?

Attach it to the BOM record or store it in your document system under the change request number so it can be found during an audit.
