Nigeria VAT Tax Invoice Template

A Nigerian VAT invoice needs the supplier and buyer details, the TIN, a clear description of each supply, the VAT charged and the totals. This template builds that layout so your finance team can issue consistent invoices without redrawing a Word file each month.

Starting point only, not tax or legal advice. Confirm current VAT rate, exemptions (for example basic food items) and any e-invoicing or fiscalisation obligations with the Nigeria Revenue Service or your tax adviser before issuing.

Automate VAT checks in your ERP

Optional: we review your tax code setup and flag invoices where VAT is likely wrong.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Fill the supplier and buyer fields once, set the invoice number and date, and confirm the VAT rate. Export to PDF for sending or Word if your team prefers to complete the line items by hand. The supplies table has three blank rows to start; add more in Word or Excel after export. Keep the invoice number sequential and never reuse a number, because your tax records and customer reconciliation rely on that sequence.

  • Use the registered company name exactly as it appears on your TIN record
  • Show the buyer TIN on B2B invoices where the buyer is registered
  • State the currency on the face of the invoice
  • Keep a sequential numbering log

What a VAT invoice should contain

Nigerian VAT is charged on taxable supplies of goods and services, and the invoice is the document that supports the output VAT you remit and the input VAT your customer claims. At minimum show who supplied, who bought, what was supplied, the value before VAT, the VAT amount and the total. Zero rated and exempt supplies should be identified as such so the customer does not claim input VAT incorrectly. Check current rules because rates and compliance requirements change.

Worked example

A Lagos component maker sells goods worth NGN 2,000,000 before VAT. At the 7.5 percent rate the VAT is NGN 150,000 and the invoice total is NGN 2,150,000. If the same invoice also carries an exempt line, show it separately with VAT of zero so the VAT total reflects taxable lines only.

Common mistakes and ERP notes

Frequent errors are mixing taxable and exempt lines under one VAT figure, missing buyer TIN, and issuing invoices outside the numbering sequence. In an ERP, configure the tax code on the item or customer so the invoice computes VAT automatically, and use this template for manual or exception invoices such as credit notes raised outside the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What VAT rate does this template use?

The default is 7.5 percent, but the rate is an editable field. Always confirm the rate that applies to your supply, because zero rated and exempt supplies exist and rules can change.

Does this replace an e-invoicing system?

No. It produces a formatted document. If your business must report invoices through a government platform, you still need to follow that process. Use this for manual or backup invoices.

Can I add more line items?

Yes. Export to Word or Excel and add rows to the supplies table. The totals table is blank so you can enter figures from your own calculation.

Is it free?

Yes. The template runs in your browser and exports to PDF, Word, Excel and CSV without registration.

If you issue many invoices from an ERP and want VAT checks run automatically before posting, Netray can review how your tax codes are set up.
