SAP B1 Warehouse Bin Location Capacity Planner

Switching a warehouse to bin locations in SAP Business One is easy to start and hard to undo, so the bin list deserves planning. This worksheet lets you lay out codes, zones, dimensions and capacity first, then export the clean list to Excel for loading.

Plan the naming convention first (zone, aisle, rack, level), then load the final list to the warehouse in SAP Business One. Check whether bin locations are enabled for the warehouse before you import, since that setting is configured per warehouse.

Warehouse setup review

Optional review of your bin structure and item flow before enabling bin locations in SAP Business One.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Add one row per bin. Use a consistent bin code pattern that encodes zone, aisle, rack and level so users can walk the warehouse by reading codes. Enter dimensions in centimetres and a usable fill percentage that reflects packaging and aisle clearance. Usable volume calculates automatically and totals update below.

The calculation

Usable volume in cubic metres = length x width x height in centimetres divided by one million, times fill percentage. Total capacity helps you judge whether the planned space can hold the peak inventory you expect, which you can estimate from stock value and average volume per unit.

  • Typical fill factors are 60 to 85 percent
  • Leave headroom above pallets for handling
  • Reserve zones for quarantine and returns

Design tips for SAP Business One

Define separate zones for receiving, quarantine and shipping so stock status is visible by location. Keep codes short enough to scan and print on labels. Decide early which items will be bin-managed, since bin tracking adds transaction steps for every goods movement in that warehouse.

Common mistakes

Making bin codes too long, mixing meaningful and random codes, planning bins by physical size without regard to what is stored there, and enabling bin locations on a warehouse with open negative stock. Clean stock balances first and test with one warehouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do bin locations work in SAP Business One?

You enable bin locations per warehouse, define bins, and then goods receipts, issues and transfers record the bin used. Stock is then visible by item and bin. Confirm behaviour for your version before rollout.

Can I change bin codes later?

Bins with stock are restricted, so settle the naming convention before you load. Renaming is limited once transactions exist, which is why planning here saves rework.

What fill percentage should I use?

Start with 70 to 80 percent for palletised goods and lower for irregular items or mixed storage. Adjust after a cycle count shows how full the bins really get.

Can I import the list into B1?

Export to Excel, align the columns to the import template you use, such as the Data Transfer Workbench, and test in a sandbox company first.
