Matrix covers standard SAP ECC 6.0 movement types; your system may have customer copies with different settings. Check T156T in your system (or OMJJ) for the exact texts and allowed special stocks. Within one plant and valuation area, stock type changes create no FI document because value does not change.

Get a movement type posting guide for your plant

Send us your plant's MB51 movement type summary and we will return a cut-down posting guide with your custom types and authorization notes.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Search for the from stock and to stock you need, e.g. 'Blocked' and 'Unrestricted'. The row gives the movement type, its reversal and the MIGO action (Transfer posting, Goods issue, Goods receipt, Return delivery). The Accounting document column tells you whether finance will see a posting. The Note column carries the common misreads. Export the matrix to Excel and hand it to warehouse leads as a posting guide, cut down to the rows your plant uses.

The pairs people mix up

122 versus 161: 122 is a return delivery referencing an earlier goods receipt (MIGO Return delivery, with a reason), and it reduces the GR quantity on the PO; 161 is a goods receipt on a PO item flagged as a returns item. 201 versus 261: 201 consumes to a cost center, 261 to an order (production, maintenance or internal order), and the account assignment object is the difference. 201 versus 202: 202 is not another issue type but the reversal that brings stock back. 343 versus 344: there is no separate unrestricted to blocked type; 344, the reversal of 343, is used for it.

  • 122: return against a GR document
  • 161: returns item on the PO
  • 201: cost center, 261: order, 221: project, 241: asset
  • 344 and 350 are posted deliberately as reverse-direction moves

Worked example: quarantining a lot

A supervisor finds damaged pallets in unrestricted stock at storage location 0001. Post 344 in MIGO Transfer posting to move 40 EA to blocked; no FI document is created because value stays in the same plant. Quality reviews them and decides 30 EA are usable: post 343 for 30 EA back to unrestricted. The remaining 10 EA are scrapped from blocked with 555 and a reason code, which posts the value to the scrap cost center. MMBE shows each step immediately, and MB51 by movement type gives the audit trail.

ERP notes and gotchas

With QM active and an inspection lot, do not use 321 manually; the usage decision in QA11 posts the stock and keeps the lot consistent. Two-step transfers (313/315, 303/305) leave stock in transit that MMBE shows separately; forgotten 315s are a common cycle count issue. 601 must be reversed with VL09, not MIGO. 561 should be blocked after go-live through M_MSEG_BWA because it creates value without a source. Customer copies of these types (9xx or Zxx) may behave differently, so check OMJJ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which movement type moves unrestricted stock to blocked?

Use 344 in MIGO Transfer posting. 344 is the reversal of 343 (blocked to unrestricted) and is the standard way to block unrestricted stock. Neither creates an FI document within the same plant. Use 350 to move quality inspection stock to blocked.

What is the difference between 122 and 161?

122 is a return delivery that references a goods receipt material document and reduces the received quantity on the PO; reverse with 123. 161 is posted as a goods receipt for a PO item flagged as a returns item, typically for planned returns with a credit; reverse with 162.

What is the difference between 201 and 261?

Both issue unrestricted stock to consumption. 201 posts to a cost center, 261 to an order such as a production order, maintenance order or internal order. Choosing the wrong one means the cost lands on the wrong object. Reversals are 202 and 262.

What is movement type 311 used for?

311 transfers stock from one storage location to another in the same plant in one step, with no accounting document. Reverse with 312. For two-step transfers with stock in transit, use 313 to remove and 315 to place, and for plant to plant use 301 or 303/305.

If you want warehouse and finance teams to ask in plain English which movement type to use, or what moved where yesterday, answered from your own ECC data on your servers, we can set that up.
