SAP Kanban Quantity and Number of Containers Calculator
Setting up an SAP kanban control cycle means choosing a number of kanbans and a quantity per container. This calculator gives you both from demand and replenishment time, so the values entered in PK05 have a basis.
Your numbers
Full cycle: signal, production or transport, receipt and bin return.
Buffer for variability, expressed as a percent of demand over replenishment time.
Your results
Standard kanban sizing formula. Check against minimum container sizes, packaging rules and actual signal behavior.
Number of kanbans vs replenishment time
Sweeps Replenishment time from 0.5 to 10, holding your other inputs fixed.

How to use this calculator
Enter average daily demand, the total replenishment time from signal to full container back at the consumption point, a safety factor, and the quantity per container. The tool returns the number of kanbans, the maximum inventory and the days of demand held in the loop. Slide replenishment time on the chart to see why shortening it is the biggest lever.
- Measure replenishment time end to end, including wait for pickup.
- Use demand at the peak of the planning horizon rather than the average if the item is seasonal.
The kanban formula
Number of kanbans equals daily demand times replenishment time times (1 plus safety factor) divided by quantity per container, rounded up. Maximum inventory in the loop is then the number of kanbans times container quantity. This is the same relation used in Toyota style pull systems and appears in the SAP control cycle as the number of kanbans and kanban quantity fields.
Setting it up in SAP
Control cycles are maintained in PK05, with fields for the supply area, the replenishment strategy (in-house production, external procurement or stock transfer), number of kanbans and kanban quantity. Kanban status flows from empty to full through the board in PK13N. For the in-house strategy, the empty signal triggers a production order or run schedule quantity. Review the sizing after each change in demand or lead time.
- Reducing container quantity is usually better than adding more containers of large size.
- Revisit the loop with a kanban recalculation if demand shifts by more than about 20 percent.
Common mistakes
Teams often size on average demand and then run out during peaks. Another mistake is using the production cycle time instead of the full replenishment time. Also avoid adding kanbans to hide chronic problems; each card is inventory.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I count replenishment time?
From the moment an empty container signals until a full container is available at the point of use. It includes waiting for pickup, production or transport, inspection and put away.
What safety factor is typical?
Ten to thirty percent is common for stable demand and short loops. Higher factors suit variable demand, but treat them as a prompt to fix variability rather than a permanent allowance.
Which SAP transaction maintains control cycles?
PK05 for control cycle maintenance, PK13N for the kanban board, and PK21 to display the control cycle list. Settings depend on the replenishment strategy chosen.
Is kanban suitable for all parts?
Kanban works best for repetitive, stable demand parts. Low volume or highly variable items are better served by MRP, lot for lot or make to order.
Netray can analyze SAP consumption and kanban board history to show which control cycles are oversized or regularly run empty, without writing anything back.
