SAP Operation Lead Time Scheduling Calculator

Every SAP routing operation carries times that add up into scheduled duration. This calculator shows what each element contributes and how much of lead time is spent doing work versus waiting.

How to use this calculator

Enter the order quantity and the routing standard values: setup, processing per base quantity and teardown. Add queue, wait and move times from the routing or work center defaults. The result gives operation time and total lead time in minutes, hours and working days. The chart sweeps order quantity to show how lead time grows with lot size.

  • Setup and teardown are fixed per lot; processing scales with quantity.
  • If your time units differ in the routing (for example hours), convert to minutes first.

How SAP schedules an operation

In SAP, the operation duration comes from standard values scaled to the order quantity, divided by the efficiency rate. Forward or backward scheduling then places the operation on the factory calendar and adds queue, wait time and move time. Queue and move time default from the work center in CR02 (Scheduling tab) but can be overridden in the operation. The total of all operations, with float before and after production, feeds the planned order dates and in-house production time.

Reading the result

If lead time per unit is much larger than processing time per unit, the lot is spending its life in queues. Reducing queue time or moving to smaller lots improves flow, whereas shrinking processing time by a few percent does little. Compare lead time with the in-house production time in the MRP 2 view, which should be at least the longest realistic routing duration.

  • Production order scheduling in CO02 recalculates dates using these elements.
  • Reduction levels can shorten queue and wait times in the schedule if the order is late.

Common mistakes

Planners often copy a default queue time of several days onto every operation, which inflates lead times and forces MRP to plan early. Another mistake is entering processing time per piece when the base quantity is 100, making durations 100 times too long or short.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between queue time and wait time in SAP?

Queue time is the wait before an operation begins, wait time is the wait after it finishes, for example cooling. Both are planned time in the schedule and are not processing time for capacity load.

How does base quantity affect the calculation?

Standard processing time refers to the routing base quantity, so total processing equals processing time times order quantity divided by base quantity. A wrong base quantity is a very common data error.

Does SAP count the factory calendar?

Yes. Scheduling places the duration on the work center factory calendar, so weekends and holidays extend elapsed time. This calculator shows working days only.

Where is in-house production time stored?

In the MRP 2 view of the material master, field In-house production time (MARC-DZEIT), used when planned orders are created without a routing.

Netray can compare routing times and queue defaults against actual confirmation data from SAP, highlighting routings whose scheduled lead time deviates from reality.
